66 Ford emergency brake

I did a rear brake job but am having trouble getting the e-brake to hold properly. I have adjusted the shoe clearance but the brake stiil does not hold well. The problem is worse when the truck is trying to roll back. I carry a camper on this truck so the added weight makes the problem worse. Anybody have experience with e-brake problems on this year of truck[66 ford 3/4 Ton. What are some general problem areas to be aware of? Thanks for any help. Dave.

Hi Dave, Welcome to FTE

Maybe have someone check em with you for correct install. The cable is connected directly to the rear wheel brakes. When properly installed and pulled up tight they should hold.

You might have to adjust the front cable, this is done at the location where all 3 cables together. Make sure to spray pen.oil and let it soak so you don't break the rod.

Agree the probable culprits are the cable adjustment and/or frozen or binding cables in the cable housings. I'm talking about the two cable housings coming from the wheels up to the front the truck. Repeated use of penetrating oil and alot of working them back and forth were needed to get mine going again (some disassembly required). Grit, grime and rust freeze them up over time. Now I spray them with oil when I change the oil on the engine and have had no further problems. Be sure to check for kinks or frayed cables preventing free/full movement. Sounds like you've got the clearance between the shoes and drums covered. There is also the possiblity that your drums have been turned beyond their tolerance. P.S. Drum emergency brakes don't work nearly as well in reverse as they do forward when in motion.
