Hello, I recently aquired a 1990 F150 from my brother. Someone tried to steal the truck sometime back and destroyed the ignition switch in the process. My dilema is that the steering wheel lock is engaged and I have no way to disengage it. I need to get the truck on a trailer to bring it back. Anyone know how to remove the ignition switch and/or a way to disable the steering wheel lock? Thanks.
I thought of that, I am not sure how hard it is to remove and reinstall the column. I removed a column on an 88 ranger and it was a pain getting to the bolts underneath the dash. How is the column attached in the engine bay? Any other suggestions? Thanks for the response.
I wouldn't think that you would have to remove the whole column.
I would start by trying to remove the steering wheel and go from there.
If you have to remove the whole column it's not hard at all ...There should be 2 bolts that holt it to the dash brace...If the ignition lock itself is broke then try removing the steering wheel and the colar where the key lock is...After that your good to go ...Just place wheel back on and you will be able to start and steer it ...Also check the ignition actuator to make sure it is not bent or broke....That is what happend to mine and had to take apart the whole upper part of the steering column
How do a go about removing the steering wheel, the ignition is destroyed. As far as the piece that surrounds the ignition switch it is metal and it seems to be one solid piece (I might be wrong).
Two screws come in from the back to hold the horn pad on. If you have CRUISE there is a (2) prong plug that has to be unplugged and a ground wire pulled out, then the horn pad will come off. Take a 15/16" socket and take off the nut that holds the steering wheel on. Requires a wheel puller to get the wheel off. There is a flat inside the wheel hub and a flat on the steering column for alignment when you put it back on.
Alright, last time I looked (the truck is 2 hours away) underneath the column there were only two screws torwards the back of the column. Thanks, any other suggestions?
Two screws come in from the back to hold the horn pad on.
These screws are actually small phillips head screws that pass thru the steering wheel and tighten to pull the horn pad down on to the steering wheel. If you look at the back of the steering wheel you should see them.
If I remember correctly the lock mechanism is a ring on the steering column that has (2) pins on it. I can't remember whether or not the lock still functions once the wheel is removed. Will see what I can find.
