Is Dextron-lll Mercon the fluid I'm looking for for my E4OD? Everybody says use Mercon, not MerconV or multi-application T/F. All I can find is Dextronlll Mercon.
the 4r100 uses mercon/dextronIII only i am not sure on the e4od. look on the dipstick it will tell you what to use, if it says mercon then the mercon/dextronIII is the right stuff. like you you said do not use merconV or a mercon/merconV fluid
That's all I could find too at the local auto parts. Being that I wasn't sure, I bought the correct Mercon fluid at the Ford dealer. Costs a little more, but at least I knew I was putting in the right stuff.
Been there, done that. I have the E4OD and ask two Ford service managers, two Ford parts department men and managers of parts stores because I have little faith in their capabilities and they all say Mercon/Dextron III is the same as Mercon and use it in the E4OD. Dextron V is synthetic and not to be used in the E4OD. I put Castrol Mercon/Dextron III in mine. I figured that if six men that should know, tell me the same thing, it must be right. My tranny's still running........................................... ...Yet............
Another thought. I was of the understanding that there was a cleanable screen instead of a filter in the E4OD. It may of been a mixup on my part but it's not true in my '97..You might want to have another vehicle handy to run to the parts store for one.. Good luck...
Well, I finished the job per the procedure and it was quite simple. Didn't spill a drop while flushing. IMO, every automotive fluid manufacturer, (Castrol ATF) should be required to put those little 'sightglasses' on their bottles. Going from a 5 gal. bucket back to a quart bottle, clean-up was a huge mess!
