Anybody know the difference between mercon and mercon V. My owners manual (01 F250 TD with 4R100) says not to mix mercon and mercon V. It says to use mercon. Napa says they don't make mercon anymore only mercon V. I bought mercon V and have 17 qts in with 10 to go. Now I'm having second thoughts. I Drained the pan and the TC before I started adding so I'm not mixing. At least not much. I added an after market Mag Hytec pan 30K miles ago and they sold me ATF which I'm almost certain was mercon V. Now I'm not so sure and I can't find the invoice. Can anybody help me resolve this before Monday? All help appreciated.
Forthe ford SD trans look in your owners manual first ..My understanding is that only Mercon is supposed to be used...Not the V in the SD transmissions...but things change all the time...
DO NOT!!!!!!!! put mercon v in your transmission, if it is in there get it out!! what you need is mercon, the bottel may say "dextron III, mercon compatible". it says it on the dip stick and in the owners manual, do not use mercon v in a trans that specifies mercon
mercon V cured the trans shudder in my 99 crown vic 60,000 mi ago and i use in my 93 mark VIII I was told not to mix them so i drained the tran, converter, and cooler before adding i was told mercon v is synthetic and disipates heat better so far im happy the way it works for me
One of Ford's tranny engineers said that Ford's long term testing showed deterioration of the clutches in the 4R100 when MERCON V was used. This took a long time to show up. 30,000-50,000 miles.
That being said, lots of people run dual-rated MERCON/MERCON V with no problems.
MERCON is just so darn easy to find, there isn't any reason to put MERCON V in your tranny.
Your guy at NAPA is wrong. You can buy MERCON dino at Walmart and just about every convenience store in America. Mobil1 syn MERCON is widely available at AZ, PepBoys, Kragen, Shucks, etc.
OK guys, thanks to all who replied for all the input. As usual this web site has proven to be very informative. Looks like I'm gonna 1. Drop the tranny pan and the TC cover and drain out 25 qts of brand new Mercon V to the tune of $92 at the neighborhood NAPA and 2. have a fight with my friendly NAPA retailer where i go to get the good stuff. Wish me luck.
