Have a '91 4.0L 4X4 with automatic tranny. The engine runs rough at all ranges, but REALLY rough when it shifts into overdrive at highway speeds. Have checked the plugs and ignition wires and they are fine. The plugs look good when pulled and inspected. The exhaust smells "gasy" almost like a flooded smell. Also looked at the air filter and it's clean. Checked all the vacuum connections that I can find, they are fine too. I'm kind of amazed the check engine light isn't on! Running out of ideas, anyone have other suggestions?
could also be the O2 sensor-does your tailpipe have any black soot inside it? also is your MAF/MAP sensor working right? if you're running rich, these could also be "off". good luck!
Yes my tailpipe does have black soot. Where is the O2 sensor located, do you have to remove the intake manifold? Can check the MAF/MAP sensor. Thanks for these ideas. I checked the ignition coil resistance and found the primary resistance read about 1.7 ohms, spec is 0.3 to 1. ohms. The seccondary resistance varied among the cylinder pairs from 14.4 to 14.7K ohms, again spec is 6.5 to 11.5K ohms. Would these differences in resistance readings compared to spec indicate that the coil is bad? Was thinking maybe the ignition is not correct.
