hi my 1975 f1oo with a 302 engine is running rough. on accelaration the valves rattle. i have replaced the wires, spark plugs, dis. cap and rotor and checked the timing. when it idles it seems to run smooth it does have a little skip at the exhaust. if you ease on the gas it does not rattle and it seems to get up to speed and stays there just fine but you can smell raw gas at the exhaust. it was running fine then the next day it started running like it is now. i have also checked the rocker arms to see if the nuts were tight and they were.
Take the carb apart, sounds like there is a small peice of dirt holding the needle open and the gas level is too high in the carb. As for the valve rattle, it could be lifter knock, this usually happens when your oil is too thick or oil pressure is low. My newer cehbbie would have lift knock on startup. When i changed to oil i replaced a quart of oil with a quart of Marvels Mystery oil. MMO is NOT snake oil by anymeans. MMO will clean out your engine really well, you might want ot change your oil after running MMO for about 1000 miles. If you are talking about ignition pinging, adjust your timing, i never go by the factory setting, usually i will adjust until i hear pinging and back off until it stops, and i get the most performance and MPG out of that. Also change your fuel filter, it might have rusted out or something if you got dirt in there, its only 3 dollars, better than being stranded on the side of the road.
