I have an RC truck in my gallery(the red one), after all...it is one of my trucks.

It probably has about $500-$600 in it, by the time you get the base kit, upgrade bushings to bearings, high performance clutch, bell, and flywheel, disc brake, new shocks, decent radio, spare batteries and chargers, etc

it enjoys snow, mud, grass, sand, gravel, and chasing rabbits, and crawls up a 6" curb(not the sloped kind). The original front suspension arms were plastic and were constantly breaking. After replacing several pairs I finally machined some from aluminum and haven't had any problems since. Good thing too because I can't get some of the parts for it anymore.

If you want something decent, be prepared to spend some money, or you buy a cheap one and have fun beating the cr*p out of it.

I'm thinking of getting that F-350 from RS, just to have something to screw around with. I suppose it won't like snow. It's a bit more than I'd like to spend, but for once this year I'd like to get myself something that is for fun rather than repairs/expenses. I have to get myself something for Christmas (we don't have the whole 'buy for the family' thing). Last Christmas I got myself a Canon Rebel 2000 camera.

I'm still open to more input. Thanks for all the info so far.

i've got a zip-zap se, those things are great to mess with, go chasing the dogs down with it through the kitchen bc they don't know whats going on, great stuff. got the 2005 mustangabout as close as i'm gonna get to one in a while, but they are fun, my roomie has one that he built himself, it needs a near gear, but after we get time to get that, we are gonna have some fun running up and down the dorm halls with it, he says he spent way too much on it back in the day.

I broke many cheap brands before my dad figured out that the more expensive ones can take a beating. I had a Tamaya Grass Hopper, a Tamaya Blackfoot, and Team Associated RC10 when I was growing up. I can't wait to have a kid so I have a reason to get back into them.

If you go to a local hobby store you can get an electric one pretty cheap now days because the gas powered cars and trucks are the in thing now. Gas powered cars are ballistic! Go electric and save the repair bills and initial expense especially if you don't want to compete.
If you break a Radio Shack Special- it is broken. If you break a good one- it is fixable.

Check ebay! You can find good deals.

Find a local track to race on. It is orders of magnitude more fun to race than just crash around in the backyard with a buddy.

I have an rc10gt plus. and damm is it fast and if I put wings on it I would need a pilots lisence. but after and encounter with a railroad tie at half throttle well the parts are still in the box. we blew up the engine in my sons traxx stampede so I dropped in my .15 engine and I have to use a wheelie bar to keep from doing back flips. I made a custom rollcage for it and velcroed a body to it. but if you want a cheaper r/c the only one I can recommend it rhe x-mods from the shack. they are $50 and another $27 for the nmhi batteries. they charge for about 2 hours but run for like 40min and are able to keep up with the higher priced micro cars. plus you can now buy different bodies and customize them with lights body kits motors, tires, wheels, shocks, 4wd/2wd. we have 3 of them. my son runs the 00accord, daughter the 350z and me of course i run the 04 mustang. I love this hobby. been doing it for 16 yrs now. tower hobbies is a great place to shop. and good prices too.

WEll, like everyone else said, I'd stop by the local hobby shop. You thought you were droolin at Radio Shack, wait till you get in there. My brother has one of the top of the line buggy type cars from radio shack, an "off-raod vehicle". It doesnt get through much. It flies on pavement, but only to a certain extent, nothing like a good car/truck. Plus, just like real vehicles, there are all sorts of accessories for higher end RC vehicles, so once sopme of the fun starts to wear off, start upgrading it, and it's a whole new toy. Also, if you break something on one of these good cars, there are replacement parts for them. You break a Radio Shack car, you're basically out of luck.
I personaly am looking into the HPI nitro 4WD truck, anyone else own this one? I've heard good things about them, and they look pretty cool, and fast. But anyways, good luck pickin, 88.

I have a T-Maxx Gas powered first gen, and to give an example of out of control costs, i have about all told about 1800 into it without the initial purchase (think LOTS of replacement parts due to flying throught air, construction sites and such) You can keep them stock or go crazy on better aftermarket parts, best of all you can totally disassemble and rebuild them in one evening. And they are fast, the first day I had mine I had it at full speed on my street, coming straight at me, turned the wheel a little bit and smacked it right into my van tire, broke the chassis in half....

To be fair though 300 dollars of the of my investment was on a Futaba 3PDF control when they were new, an 80 dollar high torque steering servo, several replacement chassis (broken and upgrades), engine upgrades, drivetrain upgrades, converted most plastic parts to aluminum. Now it sits in my closet because I cant afford to break anything....
