I have both and if I could only have one I would choose the XBOX. I am big time FPS gamer and to me the XBOX controller and games for FPS is better. Also XBOX Live is awesome.
But if your into RPG's, Racing Games the PS2 offers alot better selection for them.
You have to look at the technical aspect. We were looking to buy a console here recently, and one of the chain stores had a display with the PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube. The XBOX blows everything else right out of the water... It's faster, and more capable that a PS2, or NGC, and the graphics are spectacular. We play alot of racing games, and Project Gotam is the best game ever.
Don't forget to look at a PC. It is more expensive, but they can blow every single gaming console system right out of the water. 1500 dollars, and you can put together a killer gaming system. I have a buisness just for custom building computers for people.

That about sums it up for me. I own an xbox, and played a ps2 for a good year before the box, and the X is just a superior machine IMO. True, there arent as many games for it, but for me, it all comes down to graphics, performance, and overall controller layout (most games are indistinguishable now it seems).
XboX for sure. It is a PC without all the extra junk. I understand that that's why there are fewer XboX games, the code is much more detailed and takes longer to write. Just what I have read on the XboX forums and newsgroups.

I think my system would work.....if I knew how to get it set up to play the games.
I have GTA3 for pc but can't get it to work right, it got me frustrated so I thought an x-box or ps2 would be easier.
I know you can modify the xbox (my friend does it, I don't know how it works), but you can save tons of games straigt to the xbox, so instead of buying games you can just go rent them and save them. I don't know if you can do the same with ps2 or not.
