Nodular 9" Identification
I've been looking for positive proof that I have a true nodular 9".
About 10 years ago, I bought the differential after wearing out some gears in a standard case. A guy I knew was selling an "N" case, I never did do any research into it (being young and dumb), and just bought the thing knowing they were king ******. I know all I have to do is check the casting number, but I'd just like to see if I can ID it without crawling in the snow for the numbers.
It does have the double ribbing, and the "N", but it looks like it's just a bead of weld to create the letter, and not stamped into the housing. I searched and could only find stamped "N"s.

Mine also does have the larger yoke like the one shown in the picture, but I'm wondering if somebody could have just found a "WAR" housing, and welded in the "N".
'Mustang and Fords' website mentions how the 2 are very similar.
"Another fairly common 9-inch case is the "WAR" casting, with two 12- and 6-o'clock ribs, very similar in appearance to the smaller '67-and-up 8-inch case, and the heavy-duty 9-inch "N" case. The "WAR" case doesn't employ the high nodular-iron witnessed with the C7AW-E case mentioned earlier. The "WAR" case pinion pilot support doesn't have as much iron either, making it more prone to failure. "
I'd really appreciate any info you can give me. I noticed a post from BB saying that he noticed some nodulars have the rounded formed "N" in some cases, but wasn't sure.

Thanks for the link.
This supports my case as a nodular. No filler plug in housing, in which mine does. But exactly how do you fill it with fluid? Maybe the plugs on the backside.

To be sure, I'm going to take some digi pics tonight. Haven't rolled around in the snow for awhile.

I had high hopes till I read,
"Have also viewed a N case marked with an "N" with a C2AW-4025-A casting number,it was used in conjunction with a C5AW-4668-C Daytona pinion support.Case was double ribbed, this casting number is not listed in my books or references, will have to do further research regarding this one. "

And call or email these boys, they seem to be the folks who know 9" diffs.
Should've cleaned the casting number off. It's just below the rib of the "30".
Here you can see how bad it was leaking. Looks like the gasket. Anyways, you can see the beaded "N".
I still gotta get under there and again and get the number now.
"Here's a quick tip someone sent me for spotting an N case while installed in a housing, look to the area just to the right of the carrier fill plug on side of case, on an "N" case an only an "N" case this area will be filled in-flat cast metal. On the "WAR", "WAB" and standard cases there will always be a cast in recession that forms a pocket. "
