Demagnetize

Anybody know of a home remedy for demagnetizing little things ? screw drivers, wrenches, etc.

I have a "magnetizer" from Craftsman. It is basically two magnets with opposite poles held together by a rubberband. To magnetize a screwdriver, I put it in the hole in the middle. To demagnatize, I slide it along the outside. So maybe by sliding your item along a magnet in various directions, the magnetic charge will be removed. ?? Good luck, John

PS: This thing was cheap to buy. $2-3??

Do you have an old VCR tape demagnetizer? Maybe that would work???

Find a watch shop that does repairs on site and they should have a demagnatizer to demag. watches! If you were near by I have one!

I actually learned something in college!

To demagnatize something drop it on a concrete floor. The shock will realign the ionic structure and demagnatize the object. This does work, as I use magnetic trays and have to demagnatize wrenches and bolts often.

demagnatization!

to de magnatize somthing strike it with both leads off a battry charger or a 9v battery, this will randomise its atoms,i think thats what he called it,
where as when you touch it on a magnat you align the atoms, hey school was 20 years ago, but it works !

Or wind a coil of insulated wire, as many turns as you can manage, 18 gauge or so, around a tube or something insulated and non-metallic. This is just one wire, not like 2 or 3 wires in an extension cord. Break one wire in an old extension cord and splice this coil into it. Plug something that pulls a reasonable current into the extension cord, maybe a heater or a couple hundred watts of light bulbs. Now, slowly push the magnetized tool into the coil, leave it a while, (seconds, not hours), then pull it out slowly. And unplug all this stuff. The alternating magnetic field should neutralize the magnetism.
You can use the same coil to magnetize stuff; just put the tool into the coil, then momentarily touch the leads across a DC source like a car battery. Don't do this with a battery that's being or was recently charged, or the sparks might ignite hydrogen gas and ruin your day... use jumper cables as an extension or something like that.

I know that 10 turns or so is enough to magnetize; demagnetizing could take more. Try it and see.

Tape demagnitizer

A tape eraser/demagnitizer will work just fine. I use mine often as my tools, especially screw drivers, get magnatised often. There are times when I want a tool magnatized and a DC shot on a coil or stroking across a magnet will set the magnatism and the tape eraser takes it off.

Harbor Freight sells an inexpensive one that should work fine. It's just magnets encased in a plastic frame. All of their junk is returnable if it does not work. Your next best option is to find a local watch repairman like some of the other posts have suggested. Any of them are only going to work on small items, nothing very large in diameter.
