my truck at any rpm sputters like its not getting gas, like when i'm at 2000rmp it will jump down to 1500rpm then it repeats and repeats. it has a new cap and roader new spark plugs, and wires, i'm thinking it could be the fuel filter. any ideas? thank you.

That would be where I would start. Also sounds as if there might be water in the tank. When you change the filter, let some fuel run out of the tank into a clean pan and see what you find. I would also pull the top off the carb (if it's stock) and check the bowl. If you see any trash in there, time to remove and rebuild.
so i replaced the fuel filter, there is water in the fuel. if i run the tank empty and fill it with fresh gas will that fix it? (by the way, i had a bad gas cap. replaced it so no more water should enter the tank)
You can try one of the many fuel additives out there. Most part stores and wally-world type stores carry them. That should help get any remaining water. It doesn't take much water to make your engine sputter.
so i've gone through about half a tank of gas since replacing the fuel filter, and it is getting worse. it has now started to backfire. it is almost acting like my '75 did when it had a bad coil and blew up the muffler. any imput?
Any chance you had some rust in the bottom of the tank? If you ran it dry, it could have sucked some of that in and is clogging your new filter. You might want to try one of the larger see-through fuel filters to see if you have crud in the tank/lines. You could have some crud stuck in the carb too.
i didn't quite run it out of gas so i'm pretty sure no rust got sucked up. i did find a leak in the carb that i fixed. the wires to the coil were burnt through so i replaced them. nothing has improved. i will be putting some fuel additive in the tank tonight and see what happens tomorrow. thank you for your help thus far.
so i rebuilt the carb, no luck. replaced the coil, not it. put a bottle of that iso-heet crap in it, went threw a tank of gas, nothing. fuel filter and spark plugs replaced before which didnt help. anyone care to venture a guess? points gap was set too close
Get a hold of a dwell meter and set the dwell on your points as well, this is more important than gap is. Have you checked your fuel pump? If this is like my old 1969 Ford with a 390 and a mechanical pump, there's a canister style filter on the bottom of the pump. The canister threads on, simply twist, remove, and replace the filter, along with the rubber seal, and dump the fuel that resides in it, as water can and will sit in there.
