NOTE: I am COMPLETELY ignorant as far as auto repair so excuse any incorrect terminology. I have also searched the forum for answers and have found none that applied. If I missed a past thread please point me to it.
Now to the problem:
My analog odometer has stopped moving (as has my tripometer). What is the probable cause and is it a DIY fix (i.e. a fuse) or is it a professional job? Will it be expensive?
I have a 1999 Explorer Sport with 63xxx miles. It stopped working this past week while I was stuck in snowy, windy, stop-and-go traffic going to Chicago for Thanksgiving if that helps the diagnosis.
I am starting to get frustrated by this vehicle. I have the transmission problem where it lurches between 2nd and 3rd gear and have the bad rear wiper and the loud wheels and the loud IAC (think that is what it was called) valve...
Update: I called Ford for a quick over-the-phone estimate and they said the the whole unit (speedometer included) needs replacement and will be roughly $450 ($300 part+labor). Is this as outrageous as it seems? The speedometer works still. It's just the odometer that broke. Why would both need replacement?
Happy Holidays!
Check your yellow pages for a speedo shop in the area. Once uppon a time there were many such repair/ claibration shops in almost all areas.
Price quoted is outrageous, but not unexpected from Ford. I needed a fuel gauge pod for my 91 and they wanted over $90 just for the part. Complete junk yard dash unit was only $65, so guess which one I opted for.
Dialtone
It works again!!! I called around and it seems that nobody would touch it. Something about the THEFT light...
I figured that I would just live with it since I would not be selling the car and I have a gps unit to track mileage. It would've been $500 at the dealer to replace the whole gauge (speedo, incl.) I thought that was no worth it.
Then a week or so ago, my miles just started moving again! The trip works too...I am glad I didn't have it fixed!!!
