I picked up a 67 short bed about a year ago, but I am just now getting around to messing w/ it. I'm just about to finish my 460/C6 71 short bed. Anyway, this 67 short bed used to be a service truck, bright orange w/ no options except a spare tire carier in the bed and two gaps in the grill.
It is a steel 67 grill and part of the grill is cut out, but I don't know what goes there. I can tell it is factory because where the horizontal bar in the grill is cut, there is a support brace behind it so it won't get pushed back or bent. Did a guard of some kind mount through the grill? Was there a fog light option? I would like to put something there and then have the grill chromed so any help would be great!
The spare tire holder in the bed is mounted right behind the rear window and the tire is mounted at an angle. I will try and get a picture so you can see what I'm talking about. The tire and wheel are still mounted and have the original hub cap mounted.
I have seen a couple of 67's in the junkyard with the same grill as you are describing. In the recess was a pair of amber fog lights. I don't know if it was factory or a dealer add on but these all looked original as well. As far as the spare tire carrier I would have to see a pic to know.
I will defenitely let you know if I see them again. I would assume that there was a special mount that it bolted to as well. I will try to get the whole set up if I see it.
I have seen a couple F250 service trucks in the past...one just recently...that has a large brush guard or pusher on the front...brackets were welded to the guard and went through the grill down to the frame of the truck ( if I remember correctly ) ..i remember thinking "damn..that grill would be perfect if it weren't for some puke cutting holes in it"
michael, That is what I'm afraid of. I don't think that was it because I can't find any other mounting spots for a guard, but you never know. I hope it was lights and I can find something that goes there.

I bought a 68 new in 68. It had a steel brush guard mounted to the bumper mounting bolts with two 3/4" steel reinforcing bars going back through holes cut in each side of the grill. The bars then went through holes cut in the radiator core support, bent at approx. 45 degrees and then bolted to the frame. Pretty sure this was a dealer installed option. Does yours have holes in the core support behind the holes in the grill?
