Took my new truck to the mountains this weekend (Lake Arrowhead, CA) After driving up the mountain and nearly reaching the top I heard a high pitch whining sound coming from the engine....When I pushed on the accelerator it sounded like something was winding up and if I let off the accelerator the noise stopped....I did not lose any engine power...The noise stopped once I reached the top of the mountain and I have not heard it since....Any idea what caused it? Do these trucks have built in fans that come on when the engine gets hot? All the temps showed normal the entire time.....The noise only lasted about a mile or two.....My truck: 05 F250 PSD CC SB 4WD ....only 450 miles on it so far...Any ideas? Thanks.
yep the fan has a temp actuated clutch [the engine or tranny sensors can trigger it] almost sounds like a jet under the hood when it really gets going.
totally normal, enjoy the ride and don't let the Internet message board paranoia get to you
I wasn't towing anything....only one passenger in the truck with me...the sound was similar to very high rpm's...but the rpm's were fine...and the engine power was fine.. Coming from a diesel newbie is it a bad thing if your turbo is "spooling up"?

Nope, that just means it is building RPMs within the turbocharger to build up boost
4x4Mark, PSD, I'm going with the fan on this one . . .
With all the high frequency hearing loss that I have I don't hear the turbo that much but when the fan kicks on I definitely hear it. I've heard people comment that they thought that the tranny was slipping or something because it does sound a little like the revs are picking up.
I do know that it isn't the turbo because I can hear the noise kick in when I'm already at 20+ lb of boost and have been there for a while. So the turbo would have already been spooled some time ago. That and the fans kick in and run for a bit and then kick back out, all while I'm still on the throttle, i.e., boost there all the time.
Now granted that this usually happens when I'm towing and not all that frequently unloaded but on a recent trip to Big Bear (not far from Lake Arrowhead) with just the bike in the back I did have the fan kick on for a sec.
Thanks Daryl! I'm still getting used to the sounds this thing makes Next weekend it's getting a good wax job and line-x! Gotta protect the red clearcoat!
Love that Line-X! Been great for me so far. I have the Toredor (sp?) Red and don't have the truck garaged so a good wax job every now again probably keeps the truck feeling good.
