HI there... this is my first post being that i am new to this site. I own a 1992 F-250 4x4 S/C L/B 460 7.5L. ever since my husband and i bought the truck from a fellow marine we been having this awefully LOUD grinding noise come from the front passanger side tire. we looked to make sure it wasnt rubbing on anything and it wasnt. so we jsut figured it was a kink or something and that it would just go away. Well almost a year later we still hear that noise. It only makes that noise when i turn right. sometimes if i make a slow turn and turn the wheel fast enough you hardly hear it. but if i make a somewhat wide right turn it lets out this awefull grind that turns peoples heads. well over this weekend we replaced the shorter tie rod closest to the front right wheel thinking that would solve the problem but it didnt. my husband thinks it could be the upper and lower ball joints for that tire. any suggestions? thanks a bunch
Does this truck have a solid front axle or an IFS front axle? You say it only happens when you turn right. It might be as simple as the turn stop has broken off, and is allowing that wheel a little further past where it's supposed to be when turning than normal. Could also be a worn cv joint or u joint depending on the type of front axle you have. Since you've managed to drive it for a year, have you checked anything like front wheel bearings as well? To check the front ball joints, simply jack that side of the truck up, and grab hold of the top and bottom of the tire, and push/pull towards you. If the tire moves in and out at the top and bottom, one or both are worn. Being as it's a grinding noise, I'd be looking at the moving parts more so than the steering parts. Bearings, u-joints, etc. Anything that spins.
Could be "dry" balljoint,NO way to lubricate from factory. Also check bolts on axle pivot bracket ( 92-94 liked to come loose).Like RR4E mentioned, check axle u-joint,they like to "freeze" up.
Loud grinding noise and you are still driving it after a year. What does it take to get you to take your vehicle to a mechanic? Do it before the ambulance has to take some broken bodies to the morgue.
Does the noise depend on whether or not the truck is moving? If it only makes noise when your rolling, it might be a wheel bearing. When you turn one way the bearing unloads, so it won't make any noise, but when you turn the opposite, the load is on the bearing and it will growl.
Well it only makes the noise when the truck is moving.. i dont exactly know what type of axel it is...whats the diffrence and i will go look to find out...or will it tell me in the owners manual? when my husband changed the tie rod over the weekend he didnt notice if the wheel pushed in or out.
I was wondering if you figured out what was going on with your truck. I have the excact same truck with a similar problem. My truck has a "pop" noise from the right Tire area every 4th or 5th time I turn right, I also get the grinding noise occasionally, about once every 20th right turn. I am also noticing the outer side of my right tire is wearing down. I have had it up on jacks and do not notice anything loose, when I pull/push on the top and bottom of the tire it doesn't move. I cannot get it to make the sound when I have it jacked up, so I can't locate the noise.
i would also say its a wheel bearing thats bad. turn one way it goes away because the weight is off it, turn the other way its loud because more weight is on it. usually a wheel bearing is a clicking noise but if its gone on too long i suppose it could be a grinding sound.
hey there. yes i did figure out what was wrong with my truck. the left front bumper was i think pused in a lilbit when we got it so the bottom underside of the bumper was rubbing on it. all i did to fix it was cut a small section off of it and smooth it down and since then i have not has a single problem. now when i first heard it i thought it was coming from the right side but infact it was coming from the left side...so while your truck is on has some one turn the whell and look closely cause we didnt notice it at first. Let me know how things pan out!
