I'm thinking about purchasing a 2000 Expedition however it has 120K miles on it. The exterior looks like it's in great shape but the interior is a bit ragged out. I don't mind so much, I'm just looking for a reliable and safe car for my wife and children.
Can anyone tell me any particular problems or recalls that model had so I can ask the seller if those were fixed or were an issue at one time? What is the typical Preventative Maintenace timeline for this model and make? What repairs should I expect to make in the immediate future? Is it unheard of getting 200K out of this vehicle?
It's definitely NOT unheard of to get 200k out of that vehicle...but I thought my 98 EB Expy was 100% reliable until I launched a piston/rod through the right side of the block a week ago this morning (about this time, actually). It has 104k miles on it.
Not trying to steer you away from it...just be aware of what can happen - it could happen to any of them.
I bought my wife a 2000 EB with 90K on it almost a year ago. It has 105K on it now. We are very happy with the truck but we have had 2 problems that are very common to this model. The IAC valve was replaced due to uneven idle and the rear wiper motor was replaced when it quit. Other than that we have had no problems.
IAC and bad wiper motor are common Expedition issues. Spark plugs require replacement at 100k. It's a labor-intensive job, due to the engine and ignition system design, coupled with the fact that the rear half of the engine is buried a bit behind the cowl. If they need replacement, and you take it to the dealer, don't expect a lot of change from a $400 bill. If you go to www.motorcraft.com you can download free .pdf manuals for a 2000 Expy that will outline service requirements. The Owner's Guide will NOT have this information, but another companion manual will, can't recall its name.
Full maintenance records are the key. My 1999 Expy has 80,000 miles and purrs. Part of the reason is good basic design, the remainder involves keeping up with service requirements.
I bought my 00 EB 4x4 in 02 with 21K miles ... I have 67K miles now .. I do a lot of weekend towing during the summer ... So far been through a shuddering torque converter, groaning differntial clutch pack, a bad air line union that cause the air suspension to fail, a power mirror switch, 2 shaky side view mirrors, a failed tailgate lock actuator and a dealer induced fuel injection rail leak that took 5 trips to repair. Other than thats its been a solid reliable vehicle ... Good thing I bought the extended warranty though Nothing has broken that has left me stranded ... thats important .... everything was just annoying type stuff that one shouldnt have to live with in a $40K+ vehicle ... In fact Im looking at getting a new one! I REALLY need my head examined ... J/K
