I have a 99 explorer with some kind of wied things going on... One of which is in here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...6&goto=newpost . The next one is the lights in the steering wheel for the cruise control... The left side with the on and off always worked but the side with set and cruise never did. The dealership told me that it did not have lights... Well guess what, last night they came on....
my dad has the same problem on his 98 Explorer sport. The dealership said it would be about $250 canadian dollars to replace the switches on the one side.
I have not seen the '99 but on the '96 (with the leather steering wheel) I had just did the one on the left.
1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Remove two caps on the left and right side of the steering wheel.
3. Remove the two air bag screws
4. Carefully lift off the air bag and disconnect the attached wire.
5. Place the airbag ona workbench with the pad side up.
6. Remove the two screws attaching the switch to the steering wheel.
7. Unplug the wire for the switch, remove it an install the new one.
8. Reverse the rest to assemble but the air bag screws are torqued when installed. (Can not remember the exact spec..... about 12 inch lbs)
Very interesting. Neither side on my Mountaineer have lights. I will have to see what I can do about that. I do have one light out in the dash and a light out for the rear defrost. Maybe I will be able to get all of these fixed at once but I would prefer to do it myself to save the $$$.
Any radio shack success stories out there. Does anyone have a photo of the panel. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron if that's the kind of repair that's required.

Although if you're the Radio Shack type you can figure out how to change the bulb only.
By the way, only one side unplugs from the wiring harness--I think it's the right side.
Installation isn't that hard though. Just don't set off the airbag while you have it out.

The defrost light switch is a real piece of cake to fix, if interested see the following thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=316220
I put a little detail there about how I was able to fix mine for the cost of the two bulbs at Radio Shack.

I got the defrost light to work. It looks like the fuse was in the wrong spot. When I checked all the fuses, I moved one fuse and the light started working! Easy fix!
