I have a wierd one here... My display on the radio (99 Explorer XLT) is not working correctly. It seems to take about 5 or 10 minutes to come on. And when it does it might come on 100%, or it might come one 75%.. The buttons always come on though..
Search this forum for posts on the radio display problem, there are many. Very common problem for Ford radios. There are a number of sites that will tell you how to resolder it yourself (usually for a fee) or sell you a resoldered display board.

Sounds like the display power supply board in the radio is bad. Like mason said you can get resoldered boards, resolder it yourself or just replace the radio with an aftermarket. Ford wants large $$$ for a factory radio, not worth it. Aftermarket is easiest. Soldering it yourself is fine if you are comfortable with doing so, it's not hard (I've done it on my radio about 30 times, most of the times it wasn't successfull, took about 15 one night to get it to work but I didn't have any instructions, just took it out, soldered and tried it). It is not a forever fix though. Whether you solder it yourself or get a resoldered board from someone, expect to have it happen again anywhere from 3 months to 2 years from now. If you ask me just get an aftermarket radio (of course this is coming from a guy who's display has been out for 7 months without doing anything about it). Good luck.
I have a 99 ford that has that problem. I have resoldered it and it still is a problem. there is a site out there called "The Fix" ( Do a web search on Google) some guy will sell you the instructions to resolder it for 20 bucks or you can send him the part to get fixed and he will send you a rebuilt one for 70 bucks.
