Anyone know anything about a turbo restrictor that is put on the intake side of the turbo to limit the amount of air drawn in? An individual was telling me about this but I am starting to wonder if he was confused with a wastegate and not a restrictor.
The only thing I've ever heard of that would be put on the intake to restrict the amount of air coming in would be the stock airbox. There is absolutely no good reason to restrict the amount of air coming into the engine.
What they might have been talking about is the Exhaust Backpressure Valve, or EBPV, which is immediately downstream of the turbo. It has a butterfly valve that operates when it's cold outside, and is intended to improve the engine's ability to warm up. It restricts the amount of exhaust leaving the engine, but not the intake.
Quad' I've no idea , I bought the truck used ( '96 ) , had it about 6 months . When I changed the air filter out ( went with the NAPA 6637 ) I noticed it in the intake tube . I suppose it could be a Tornado ... but not knowing what one looks like ...?? I thought about removing it , but that's all I did was think about it ! So , any thoughts ?
Hey Quad,
He may be talking about the CCV with the tube sticking up. Between the tube and the mounting bridge that takes a third it is quite a restriction. I have remove all of that stuff and the air heater too. I replaced the restriction with a blank 4" spool from a piece of tailpipe.
Let me try to explain what it looks like ... It has the shape of a turbo impeler , but the "vains" are thin and it is stationary , it's about 6" in from the mouth of the plastic/rubber intake tube .
That sounds a lot like a Tornado. Get some baseline numbers while using it, then run the truck for a while without it, and compare readings. I'll be surprised if you find that there's any advantage to having it in there.
The advertised purpose of the Tornado is to swirl the incoming air, for better atomization. I think the turbo swirls the incoming air plenty, but I'll listen to hard facts from someone that has tested it fairly.

WELL ....I guess I just learned something! I've owned the truck for about 6 months , so I have a pretty good idea of what the mileage is , so I guess I'll remove the whatever it is , and see if anything changes .
I have seen a thing advertised that sounds like it but it says it is supposed to straighted the incoming air, because the turbo spinning the air ahead of it starts to spin ahead of the turbo, and by strightening it the turbo can slice the air better and get more . I just looked at it, sounded like it might make sense but wasn't worth the $40 they wanted for it.
Get back to us on your findings. could be a very intersting thread, since it sounds like your the only one running on of these things.
This device you are describing sounds like an agitator we use in firefighting nozzles to agitate the water flow in order to produce foam, there is another one used to straighten the water stream, pretty useful for fire fighting nut worthless for a turbo charged truck.
Yeah , I have no idea what it is ( it was installed before I bought the truck ) , but I'll take a look at it to see if I can figure out what it is . Does anyone know if there's a website for the Tornado so I can compare what I have to it ?

Right idea, but wrong motor! I helped my buddy remove something like that out of his Dodge Cummins - but nothing on a PSD like that that I know of. It's a C thing - they take 'em out to make the turbo sing!!

Diesel rod
Ok..... Sorry i took so long to report back but I got stuffed full of turkey and couldn't move ! Anyway I took it out of the intake tube and it is a Tornado , so I just tossed it in the trash . Now I'll keep track of the trucks mileage with out that restriction in the intake !
