Headlight Problem, Drivers side

The drivers side headlight on my son's 97 Explorer Limited has gone out. Bought a new bulb still wouldn't work. Tried the old bulb and new bulb on the passanger side and they both work. So evidently we don't have any power going to the driver side headlight. Fuses look good. Has anyone else ran into this problem? Where and what do I need to look for now? Broke wire? Connector some where that could have come loose?

Thanks,
Delos

I just had the same problem except it was for the passenger side headlight (and fog lights too). I was told it was probably one of 2 things. 1) the multifunction switch had gone bad or 2) the Lamp Out Module was bad. If you don't have the console message center, then you can probably ignore #2. Some one else on the forum can probably give you some troubleshooting tips on the MF switch.

So the right and left headlights are on seperate circuits? Man, that sounds like the old Merkur XR4Ti, and that thing had all kinds of electrical problems!

As mentioned it could be a bad lamps out module if it has one. If it has the LOM check interior fuse panel fuse 4.

If it doesnt have a LOM the lights are wired from fuse 33 to splice to headlights. And since right side is working the fuse & multi switch are not the problem and you need to test for voltage at the headlight, if voltage is good there the headlight isnt grounded.

Correction, the LOM is only wired to the low beam. Are low AND high beams both not working??
Does this have a LOM?

Whoops, forgot to give that bit of information. Yes the high beams work. Just the low beams, didn't even think to check the foglights. And I'm not sure about the LOM. I'll have to ask him tomorrow evening. I know it has the (guess it's called a trip computer) in the console. MPG, Miles to empty, that kind of stuff.

Thanks,

In that case the ground is OK. From fuse 4 this is wired thru the LOM -if it has one- then to the drivers side low beam. If fuse 4 is good the LOM is probably bad.
FYI, fuse 8 is wired to the LOM then to the passenger side low beam. Fuse 33 is wired to a splice and then to both high beams.

My son had to head back the Grant City, MO. before I got to check all the item mentioned in the above post. He was back in town for Christmas so tomorrow I'm going to get to diagnose it some more. Hopefully, I'll be able to figure this out with all the ideas you have given me.

Thanks,

More than likely the LOM or lamp out module located under the console. Its a small black box on front passenger side under the message center. Take that out and remove the circuit board. Check all the soldier connectins where the harness plug attaches to the circuit board. I re-soldiered all the points but you can tell the bad conection due to a burnt look.

I am looking at the preliminary wiring diagram that I have for a 97 mountaineer (your wiring should be the same). The interesting thing is that there are three headlamp fuses inside the vehicle (and one more in the power distribution box).

In the interior fuse panel #33 (15A) feed both high beam elements, #4 (10A) is the left hand low beam element, and #6 (10A) is the right hand low beam element.

I would make sure to check the #4 just in case. It also appears that the wiring goes through one other connector/splice betweent the fuse panel and the bulb connector. So you may need to trace that down if worse come to worse.

Additionally all of the other wiring prior to the fuse box is common between the two low beams.

Also, it could be because this is a prelim manual or because it is for a Mountaineer. But, it does not show a lights out module as being an option in the 1997 model. The only option it shows is the auto lamps (timer and light sensor) and the actual wiring of the lamps to the power/control is the same on those as the ones without it.
