If you want to swap a newer 4 cyl, find one of the newer DOHC 2.3L's used in 2001+ Rangers. It is about as close to a direct swap as you can get, apart from swapping in an old 2.3L turbo engine.
Your only issue is finding a donor car. If you're trying to keep costs down, you might want to consider doing the turbo swap as donor vehicles will be less expensive and more plentiful. While finding one of the engines in question might not be an issue, trying to track down all the wiring and other small parts can turn into a nightmare.
