16x8 or 16/10 Wheels

I'm about to purchase a set of American Racing wheels and Firstone Destination MT tires. Which of the following setups would be the best for my 97 F150 SC Flair side 4x4?

1) 16x8 w/ 265/75/16

2) 16x8 w/ 285/75/16

4) 16x10 w/ 265/75/16

5) 16x10 w/ 285/75/16

I've read the sticky on tires and wheels but am uncertain about going with the 16x10 wheels. From what I've read here it is my understanding that over 8" wheel width there is the posibility of vibration. I wish to avoid that if possible. However, if I went with the 8" and the 285's I would think my tires would wear a lot faster and wouldn't handle well with tight turns.

Any insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I vote for the 16X8 285's

I'm running the Eagle 16X8 alloy 058's Bridgestone AT Revo's 285/75/16 and love them. Handles and rides great!

If you ever think you are going to lift your truck I'd go with the 10's. That way you could run a much bigger tire without having to buy new rims.

On my 97 F-150, I had trouble with the Truck over steering with the 10" tires. It was kinda pushey. Always seemed to be moving right or left while on the hiway.
I went back to the stock tires and the problem went away.

On my 65 F-250 I had 10's. It was kinda skittish on a rainey smooth hiway, and would get stuck on a Wet lawn. But they carried a lot of weight without a problem.

Go with what you want, and live with whatever that brings you.

I have the same setup as 97Centurion. 16X8's with 285/76/16 Revo AT's. I have a 2" lift but the tires didn't rub before the lift. Looks and rides great!

16x10 almost always come with a rev offset meaning they will stick out farther than factory wheels. check the offset of the 16x8 against the 16x10 but in the end its your choice so choose wisely!

Thanks a ton for all your advice.

The Eagle 137's 16x8 have a +2mm offset and the 187's 16x10 have a -24mm offset.

Presently I have no intention to lift my truck and felt the same about going with the 16x10's if I did. My main concern was the handling of the larger rims so I'll probably go with the 137's and the 285's.

Once again I appreciate all the info.

I say get the 285s either way. I personally would get the 16x10s, but I like the tires to stick out a little. It's just a personal thing, I think it looks tougher.

I have an F150 4x2 (looks much like yours except 2WD instead of 4WD).. think that the 16x8's w/ 285/70/16's will work on mine w/o a lift kit?

Wayne, you won't have enough clearance with a 2wd truck to fit 285/75 tires. Maybe 265's will fit though.

Thx.. after reading many posts.. I agree, and am going w/ 265/75/16's.. Now another question.. I have an opportunity to buy some 16 x 10's wheels for a reasonable price.. what about 16 x 10's on my 4x2 w/ Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's (265/75/16's)... will I have issues? Don't want to have issues w/ handling..

Thanks

Got my truck back for the tire company yesterday. Had them put on the eagle 137's 16x8 and the 285 Firstone Destination MT's. All I can say is so far I love em. The highway ride is great. You get some noise for mud's but nothing that is overwhelming. They feel like they grip the road extremely well in dry or wet conditions (no spining of the tires). Off road I have tested them in sand, mud, and lose dirt-rock mix. I'm thoroughly please with this setup and now wait to see if the tread life will hold like the reviews have stated.

My only complaint is that when making sharp turns the tires rub a little in the inside lip of the stock mud flaps. I thought of shaving them a little but the part that is rubbed is right where a rivet is that holds a bracket. So cant realy shave them or I'd lose the support of the bracket. So now I'm toying with either a supension lift or just adjusting the torsion bars. Not sure atm.

Thanks for all the helpful info and really glad I found a great Ford enthusiest site.

Sure glad you went with the 16x8's cause 285's or 265's are not reccomended for 10'' rims at all, and any tire shop worth a hoot wouldnt try to shove a 265 on a 10'' rim. You could squeeze a 285 on a 10'', but that's really pulling out the side walls as it is only a 11.5'' wide tire.

Any where from 2 to 1.25'' on each side is optimal.

Sorry those rims are too wide for that size.
