Every couple of days when I try and start my truck it does nothing. then I slide the shift lever into gear and back into park, turn the key and the engine starts. I have adjusted the neutral safety switch on the transmission but it still does this occasionally. Has anyone else had the problem. Do I need to keep adjusting the switch or should I replace it? I hate buying those dealer only parts if there is a simple solution. thanks in advance of any help.
What year/engine/tranny? You may have a couple of things going on. I had problems a couple different times on my '90 F150 302 AOD. One time, all that was needed was to adjust the shift linkage (the process is outlined in a Haynes manual). Another time, the NSS almost left me stranded. I took it out, cleaned it, and managed to get the truck started, but then it was still intermittent, so I replaced it. If I recall, it was only about a $15 part.
Thanks Jason, My truck is an F350 with the 460 engine and E40 transmission. The switch is located on the side of the transmission. I'll have to look at a Haynes manual and check out that procedure.

Keep a flashlight and an old screwdriver in the truck. If it won't start, you can use the screwdriver to jumper from the small terminal to the battery terminal on the fender mounted solenoid. Make sure the truck is in "Park" and the parking brake is on before you do this.
This won't fix the problem, but if the problem comes up you won't end up stranded in a parking lot somewhere.
