I have a 2003 F-150 supercrew that sputters around 1300 RPM's. It is realy noticeable when traveling around 45-48 MPH and the RPM's are at 1300. I have changed my my fuel filter, checked the transmission fluid and cleaned my MAF, put fuel injector cleaner in and nothing has worked. I also thought I might have bad gas but I have gone through 4 tanks and nothing has changed. Anybody out there have any idea what might be causing this? I am traveling to Colorado this Wednesday and I am worried that it will break down along the way. Any help would be appreciated!!!!
its a shot in the dark...but a cheap fix, (free) and easy to do. Try cleaning the IAC valve. On the 5.4, it should be at the top/back of the manifold. Remove the TB cover, (Big black thing that says 5.4 on it). Then the IAC is on the back/top of the manifold. Up against the firewall. on the 4.6, its easy to get to but the the 5.4 is close quarters, but not too bad to remove. Spray the inside with Brake cleaner to get rid of all the carbon which will be easily visible. Then make sure its dry, then re-install. The IAC itself has 2 bolts and a 2 wire harness. This has been the cause of many probs where rough running or idling have been an issue. Cleaning is a temp fix.....always better to replace...but this will at least tell you if its the prob.
I was looking online to try and find a picture of the IAC but no luck so far. Do you know where I can find one to ensure I am looking at the right thing?
On the 4.6....you can miss it. Its sitting on top of the intake manifold towards the back. There is a 2 wire plug that just disconnects, then you remove 2 bolts on the IAC and off it comes. Spray the cleaner all around in the two barrel looking part and let the carbon drip out. I used a can of air to dry it...re-installed it then done.
Took apart the IAC and cleaned it with Berryman's cleaner. No change as a result. Any other ideas on what it could be. Just to reiterate what I have already done to maybe spur some thoughts: Cleaned MAF, Checked trany fluid, changed fuel filter, cleaned IAC, added fuel injector cleaner. This truck only has 37K miles on it. Of course!!! because the warranty expired at 36K. Any other thoughts out there?
Out of all the things you have already done...all left to do, at least what I would do, is check to make sure there is nothing blocking the airflow, filter, tubing...etc. After that, disconnect the battery, let the puter reset and see if it grabs any codes if it keeps happening. Sounds like you got mystery one there. May have to take a trip to the shop.
Disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the EGR valve and see if it makes a difference.
If it does you may have a DPFE problem that isn't bad enough to trip the Check Engine light but still enough to cause a stumble.
Thanks racerguy. Is there any way you can provide me a little more detail on where these are located and what exactly I need to do? I am mechanically inclined but just not sure where things are located on this truck. Thanks and I hope to here from you soon as I am leaving on a 12 hour trip in this truck at 5 AM tomorrow morning.
Remove the throttle body cover again. On the driver's side of the engine is the EGR valve. It is about 3" in diameter with the vacuum hose going into the top of it. There is a tube running from the EGR down to the exhaust manifold. Part way up the tube there are 2 hoses coming off it. At the top of the hoses is the DPFE.
Is your truck still covered under warranty?
No it isn't covered under warranty. It expiered about 1000 miles ago. I am going to read your post again to make sure I understand what I need to do and then I will comment some more. Thanks again for your help
