I would like to get a .22 rifle so I have something a little more affordable to shoot than my 30-30. Any recommendations on good ones? There are a lot of them out there, some very cheap (which I would be pretty leary of in any kind of gun). Anyone know if the Henry lever action .22 is good? Thanks.
All I have to say is Ruger 10/22. The most popular .22 for a reason. It's very accurate, affordable, and well built gun. I have one, and I absolutely love it. Plus if you want to change the look, there are tons and tons of accessories for it. I've found at least 10 different stocks for it.

I have to agree there ia so many choises to choose from
The Ruger 10/22 is a nicely built gun. If your just wanting something to practice your shot and not cost ya alot of $, I'd get a Marlin. Marlin's are very durable and easy to shoot. If you decide to go with the 10/22 however; I'm sure you will be pleased, every 10/22 I've shot was very accurate and had a clean, crisp feeling to it when I shot it.
About 25 yrs ago I bought a brand new Ruger from a friend for $40. Never once not gone off, and I have run a lot of ammo thru it. You will want to get a magazine that will hold more than its 10 rounds, they go fast. I have a couple that hold 25 and that helps.
You can't go wrong with the Ruger 10/22. I've had mine for years and it shoots perfectly. I clean it maybe every 2 years, if I remember to, and have never had a problem with it.
I've got a Marlin and I love it. It's a tube feed, I'd like to say 14 round but can't remember for sure now. Anyhow it was inexpensive and shoots great. My girlfriend bought it for me and got the cool looking camo stock. Put a $10 Walmart scope on it and I'm ready to plink. The nice thing is I can use this a lot of places because it's so quiet. Nothing like the old SKS!
Yo, Zuiko, I have never owned a Henry personally but have not been too impressed with the ones that I have had my hands on. I have never cared for a gun that is painted and not blued. This makes them more affordable but you get what you pay for. I have a 10/22, it's okay, but you can't beat the feel of either a winchester or a marlin lever gun in your hand. If you enjoy a gun you will shoot it more and I believe that is why you want to get one in the first place. Oh, and by the way, you can never have to many guns!!
i have real good luck with my 597 rem ran over 3000k rounds never had a misfire or jam and never cleaned it ( get the metal clip, not plastic) i think i paid a 100 new las january , but for also i agree i owned 3 10/22's good gun but not in STAINLESS.
Marlin Model 60, tube feed, semi-auto, is the most accurate .22 in mass production. A used one can be bought for $75.00 or less and for the money you can fire a lot of rounds. You do have to keep it clean or it will misfire occasiaonlly but if you use good ammo and clean it regularly it is a nice target rifle. I bought one in very nice shape for $50. I took the tasco 3x9 scope and replaced it with a 22 mag scope. I have probably shot somwhere around 3500 rounds with no problems.
Love my Marlin 39a Golden. I have owned it since 1968 and have put many many thousands of rounds down it's barrel. The gun is almost broken in now.
Chris.
10/22 without a doubt. I have two for myself and one each for my two sons and wife.
The trigger sucks out of the box but that is easily and cheaply corrected. Shoot it until you get tired of it then do the stock, bull barrel and scope thing. There are more custom parts for the Ruger 10/22 than any other 22 cal rifle - by FAR.
My brother has 2 10/22's and he did a synthetic pistol grip stock on one to give it a sweet assault pistol look to it and the other one has a fold down stock, bull barrel, huge scope(more for looks) and is all black and chrome now it looks sweet. He has 2 25 shot clips taped to eachother upside down for each one, you can get off 100 rounds between the two VERY fast.
Hard to argue with a Brno Varmint or American. Really hard to beat them for accuracy with anything, including Sako Finfire's and the like. I've got one of most of them and the little Brno Varmint is really hard to beat, right out of the box. It's the one that I take on the hunting trips.
I've got a 10-22 Ray Gun and there is virtually nothing stock left on it and it's a ton of fun too. Not near as accurate but really fun to shoot and fun to build.
