Hey guys, I'm looking at buying a 1994 F150 XLT w/ 5.0 and auto. Its a sharp truck, has 96,000 miles on it and was kept in good shape. But since its lived in New Hampshire its whole life, it has some rust on the oil pan. The paint is flaking off the oil pan and there is surface rust there now. Its not leaking at all-yet, so I wasn't sure if I could sand it down and spray rustoleum on it or something. But in the end I'm going to have to have it replaced. How much does this cost to have done? And if I were to do it myself, how do you go about jacking up the engine and tranny? I have air tools, jack stands and a floor jack, but no engine hoist. Any help is appreciated. Also, I did a search and couldn't find the answer I was looking for.
That is the same thing that happened to me. The paint chipped off and water got in between the paint and the metal and formed an awesome corrosion site. Anyway had my buddy did it in his shop for $650 (new ford pan was $120) parts and labor. It was a lot of work and I think he had to lift engine a little. While he was under there I had him check diff, main seals, tranny etc. Swapped out the fluid and filter in tranny. Hope this helps.
I have a 95 F-150 6cyl, and my truck is actually in the shop right now getting a new pan put in due to a MASSIVE oil leak through the rusted out oil pan. The guys at the shop gave me a price of 625 to replace the oil pan, replace the rear main seal (since they had to move the tranny), and also to replace my oil pressure switch which was leaking. I think I got a pretty good price. Good luck.
I have done this on my 95 F150 and my dads 92 F150. Both trucks have the 300 and manual trans. Reason for replacing the oil pan was that it rusted through and started leaking. Its not that hard of a job. Just have to jack the engine and trans up to get the oil pan out. I believe that its harder to remove on the 300 because the engine is so much longer. I have never done it on a 302 but it should be easier. I did not need to remove the trans, just the trans mount and engine mounts. First time it took me a day and a half. Second time about 8 hours. Total cost $100. I choose to do all my work, because I feel that $650 is alot of money. Good Luck.
Yeah I'd like to try it myself and save $500, but I just don't know the technique on how to do it. Where on the engine do you place the jack to jack it up?
Some people use a jack under the Crankshaft pulley. I put the jack under the oil pan with a piece of wood between the two. Unbolt both engine mounts and trans mount. Jack the engine up. I had to take mine up til the trans touched the underside of the cab. It went up about 4 inches. Once you get the engine up, place wood blocks between the motor mounts and the frame. Once you do that then theres enougth room to get the pan out. I also moved the jack to the transmission so I could keep it up for a little extra room. Its not that hard of a job. I was a bit worried the first time I did mine but its up to you if you feel comfortable doing it.
I have a 92 F150 WITH A 5.0.The oilpan is rusted in several places.
I tried putting some JP Weld on it, but I know I will have to replace the pan ,soon.
I got a price quote of $550.
I thought that was high, but I guess there is a lot of labor involved.
I used to do all my own repairs, but, I lost my leg in a bike accident 5 yrs. ago, and it is harder to do some of the things I used to do.
Also my patience aren't what they used to be.
in my book it says you have to remove the plenum to get it high enough to remove the pan.while your in there make sure you put in a new high volume oil pump you'll be money ahead in the long run
I just replaced motor mounts & did like 1982 says - jack under the oil pan, cushioned by a couple of 2 x 8s. Then I braced it up using 2x8s, 2x4 and some 1x stock. If you brace right, the engine can rest on the wood and you can move the jack, which gives you a bit more room to work without banging your head into the jack. SAFETY first though. I was gonna replace a mis-installed pan gasket, but ran out of time. The estimate for replacing just the gasket was @$420.
On my 84' 351W I was able to jack the motor up...but I took off the air cleaner which gave me alot more room. EFI motors may differ. Every time I decide to pay someone to work on my vehicle I hear estimates like that and I climb back underneath myself!
I've got an oil pan from an old 351W truck motor, do people actually buy these used? I one of them I took one off, cleaned it up and repainted it and plopped it back on....this other one...I've just been using it to hold stuff :-)
Recently replaced the oil pan gasket only on my 92 F150 (302). Cost $500.00 Canadian. I had three price quotes and they were all within $50.00 of eachother.
