It has been rumored that Ford talked to John Deere, my Dad said he seen an article in the Kansas City Star about it. It said Ford looked at Detroit too. John Deere is rumored to be testing some engines in semi trucks, however most Deere engines in production now top out at 2200-2500 rpm and peak torque is usually around 1400-1500 rpm. Deere builds there own engines and they are used in farm equipment, construction equipment, irrigation pumps, and even in marine applications. They have one engine that runs off of natural gas that is used in busses and such. I don't know how the short RPM range would work in trucks, but it would be awesome to have a Deere green I-6 diesel under the hood. You could either go to the JD dealer for parts or the Ford dealer! It would be a hit for sure, I know I'd buy it.
Anything BUT a detroit diesel They are ok on busses but would really bite in a pickup.
Dana/Spicer builds Fords SD chassis? WOW! I thought Ford built their own chassis. I know they buy the SD diffs. from Dana just like they buy the transfer cases from Borg Warner, transmissions from Mazda, Borg Warner, New Process etc. The F150 diffs are Ford 8.8".
So if you buy a PSD SD with a 6 speed, Ford doesn't make the engine, transmission, differentials, frame or any steering componets... I guess that is almost like buying an American Motors! The only thing they build themselves is the body?
Except for the ones the Yanmar makes for them. I'm not sure what the cutoff point is (I think it's up to 40HP), but the diesels in their compact tractors are made by Yanmar.
the 3 cyl in our 5400 is French made ...

All I have to say is that Ford better not screw up the front axle on the 2007's like they did on the 1999's built before March of 1999. The hubs leaked 3 times under warrenty, the sway bar and springs squeeked until replaced, the ball joints are not greasable so they went out at 70,000, the rotors warp easily, the trac bar bushings are shot now at 112,000, and the LF bearings are loose. Dana 50's suck!!!
the grill, hood, bumper, cowl, fenders, and interior are all going to be changed for 2007. i have a pic. of the front end but can't figure out how to post it.
