Unhappy 4.0 Ignition Problem

I have '88 truck w/4.0 V6, that has an ignition problem. Truck runs fine, and then just quits; just as if you turned the key off. Following a cool down period of 30-45 minutes, it will restart, and run fine. Then, at a time of its' liking will repeat the shut down. I read a Hanes manual, and the fix appeared to be changing the Ignition Control Module, which is mounted on the distributor on this particular truck. Did that, and drove 15 miles before it happened again. Pulled it home, and parked it. Too unpredictable for a non-mechanic like me. Trying to avoid the garage, and would like to learn more about the problem and how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. It is my understanding that if this was a coil problem, it owuld show signs of backfiring, etc., and would not heal up over time? So I have ruled the coil out at this point, right or wrong.

Thanks in advance,
gtsmk
