Hello, I am in the Air Force stationed overseas and my dad has an 83 F-150 with the EEC III Ignition and is having all kinds of problems with it. To start with, it has been to three Ford dealers and after $2000 it still has the same problems. It runs fine and may run for three months or ten minutes and will just shut down and die. No symptoms before it dies, and after about an hour or so it starts right back up. I would think it is the control module on the fender, but that was an item that Ford replaced on the second trip. Is it possible that the ignition switch coud be the problem? Also, a new problem is that sometimes you can go outside and it will start right up and other times it won't start at all. It has no spark out of the coil when it won't start. I do have power to the coil, but it just doesn't make since that sometimes the coil would work and then sometimes not work? Has anyone else had these types of problems before? Any help you could give me would be most appreciated.
I had the same problem on my 83. Finally traced it to a relay mounted behind the battery. It provides power to the eec. Mine went intermittent for about a year. Couldn't find the prob cause everytime I started to trace it it would fire up again. Finally died and I found it. Replaced it with a generic relay for ac.
If a new relay doesn't fix the problem, have your dad check the Crankshaft Position Sensor. My EEC-III truck had the same problem you describe. When the CPS fails you will not get any spark.
The CPS is a magnetic pick-up mounted under the lobe ring behind the harmonic balancer. This replaces the pick-up and reluctor inside the DS II distributor. So it's not at all like a Dura Spark II distributor.
You can test the CPS with an ohmmeter. With the leads on the Gray and Dark Blue wires it should have 100-640 ohms resistance. A new CPS is around $60.
This is what my Dad had to say. I did tell him about the CPS in case he has more problems with it.
I PUT THE NEW RELAY IN AND AS SOON AS THE STARTER TURNED OVER, THE TRUCK STARTED, SEEMS TO HAVE FIXED IT THANK YOU AND IF YOU CAN E-MAIL THE MAN THAT TOLD YOU THANK HIM IT WILL BE A WHILE FINDING OUT IF THAT FIXED THE OLD PROBLEM BUT I BIT IT DID. ONLY COST 12.00 LATER CW
