Has anyone here used the older (York) A/C compressors for on-board air? I've been reading the tech article on how to do this & I'm wondering if you really need to use a York. I've been checking the wrecking yards near me & all I'm finding are the later non-sump type. However, I did find one of the older types, one that is called a 'Tecumseh' in my manuals. It seems to have a simular set-up to the York & I'm wondering if its worth it to use? Has anyone had any experiance with one of these? Thanks,
Edwin
Here is my theory on this: the sump lubricated type is the one to use because it is a self lubricating, piston-type compressor. A non-sump pump relies solely on the refrigeration oil in the refrigerant to lubricate the compressor as it circulates. Since air wouldn't have oil in it, the non-sump compressor would be unlubricated and sieze in short order.
Well, the Tecumseh has a sump much like the York. I'm just wondering if its harder to find parts for or if they're not as durable, etc. So far its the only sump-style that I've been able to find. Who else used the York? GM, chrysler?

Well, I went ahead & got that Tecumseh & have been fooling with it. Looks a lot like a York, just that its all cast-iron & not aluminum. Figured that at $25 if its not worth it, I'm not out much (got all of the brackets as well).

Yeah, I pulled it off of a '78 bronco w/ (I think) a 351M. I've been taking pictures of it. When I get this thing all together & working (might take a while) I intend to post some sorta tech article. Maybe offer an option for those (like me) who can't get ahold of a York? Either that, or the thing will blow up in my face...

I Use To Work On Ford Ac System, The Tecumseh It Is Not A Bad Compresor,it Can Be Mounted Horizotal Or Up Right,be Carefull When Monting The Compressor Make Sure You Have The Right Lenth Bolts.the Compresor Use Between 8 To 10 Horses
The Tecumseh I got was mounted on its side. I intend to mount it up right, on top of the P/S pump. I'm intending to use a simular set-up as the tech article on this site. WILL210, do you forsee any problems with this set-up? Should I alter anything for the Tecumseh, or will it work just as the York?
