I started keep Fuel mileage logs about 15 years ago!! I put so many miles on my trucks that I want to get every little bit of fuel mileage I can!! If you don't keep the records you can't tell what has or has not made any differance!!
on the K&N filter seen,I been racing pro quad(fourwheelers)motocross for 14 years, every body tried the K&N,you could only keep the dirt and sand out with a outwear installed for one use,the oiled gause just didn't cut it for filtration,I was allways pulling sand out of the intake, they breath great,
,out of the dirt,I would never put one in a daily driver,to keep up with it, you would have to wash and oil it every day,my brother and sister inlaw had them in ther cars(z-28)(454 ss pickup)I bet them both I could pull whads of dirt out of there intakes on a rag. They both about craped ther pants.I like the fram ,I just run the standard fram in my diesel in the ATS housing.Ford trucks just keep going and going and goig................
Mobeydick- I commend you on your meticulous record keeping. I still don't see how the Tornado will improve mileage or power, or whatever it is suppose to do. I'm assuming it's purpose is to "spin" the air to make it denser or force it harder into the intake, but on a diesel we already have a turbo that is putting up to 25lbs+ of boost into the intake, would swirling air really improve it that much? I know you said .08mpg, but I don't think that is enough of an improvement for me to get one, or to even notice. You also have to take into account rounding errors from the odometer on the truck and the fuel pump read out (I'm assuming you do). I'm sure not every pump is exactly the same and exactly accurate, probably far from it. Maybe you fill up at the same place everytime to eliminate that error.
I still wonder about your chip, and how it decreased your mileage? If nothing else, your mileage should at least stay the same. What kind of chip is it? Have you called the company with concerns about it?
Just a difference in cetane ratings from different stations, winter/non-winter blend, water amount in fuel, air temps and humidity can account for more than .08 mpg. Heck, the Powerstroke even gains mileage over its first 20K miles as the engine breaks in! I'm not sure how anyone buys into thinking an obstruction in the intake stream can help... but then again people bought a lot of Slick 50 before the FTC fined them.
farmb0y: That was .8 miles per gallon!! 8 tenths not 8 hundreths!! That's almost 1 MPG Actual numbers are before 15.423 MPGs after 16.253 MPG!! As for how it works I don't know. If you take what they say it's makes less turbulance so more air flow!!
My Programmer is a Hypertech Power programmer III. Back in the 70 when we wanted more power (on gassers) we added Cams and Carbs = more fuel and Hedders and Intakes and the like! The taller Cams and bigger Carbs added the power = more fuel the Intakes and Hedders made it breathe better!! These programmer add more fuel that's all they do they don't add less they are not going to get you more MPG adding more fuel!! They don't add air or anything else they push more fuel!! They are going to get less MPG!!
Most of the people that will tell you that their trucks MPG rose after they put in their chip or programmer are using there trucks computer to tell you what their fuel MPG!! Mine was showing 18 before and after it was 23 nothing that weights 8,000#s will get 23 MPG!! NOTHING!! The programmer changes it to read differant, do it long hand!!
webmaster: It;s not physics it's math!! Yes the differance in cetane does make a huge differance between tanks even between 1,000 and 2,000 miles!! But over 10,000 all from the same truck stop you average that out!! An yes, I buy 98% of my fuel from the same truck stop. actually the only fuel that I don't get at this one truck stop is when I'm on a trip of more that 300 miles from the stop!!
I disagree, physics is extremely important in the operation of an internal combustion engine......I find it strange that you are the only one (besides Tornado sales people) that claim an improvement with the Tornado?????

You make good points but you are leaving off two BIG things that effect horsepower and fuel efficiency that a programmer does for our diesels. They don't just add fuel, they also increase injection pressure via the IPR and advance fuel timing. Both items will cause an increase in economy. Yes, many people get fooled by the out of whack MPG computer in the overhead console but many people over at the Diesel Stop hand calculate their mileage and have found increases in fuel economy and mileage after a chip or tuner depending on the program used. Then some people like me get worse because I can't stop myself from using the extra power.
Bob don't buy one!! I'll be happy with my results and the money I know I have saved!!
MobeyDick, be assured that I will NEVER buy a Tornado!!!!! I suggest you install a second one (one behind the other) and you will see 2X the MPG
increase!!!!
Here is a quote from a URL, also attached.....this confirms what Ken said about "increased mileage gadget" SCAMS:

in the 6th post of this thread you claimed the tornado gave you an increase in mileage of .08 MPG that is 8 onehendredths of a mile per gallon. unless the tornado is improving the mileage on you truck as we speak...

Yes, I agree with you, the increase in mileage went from 0.08 in post#6 to 0.8 in post#26......if we wait long enough it will be up to a 8.0 MPG increase...And if this keeps up, he will have to start removing fuel from his tank.......
wlihntr: So I typed it wrong and I didn't re-read my post #6 after posting it!! I guess you have never done that!! Being all knowing and perfect and all!! 15.423 before and 16.253 after!! Get a life!!
Bob: Believe what you want I have the paper work to prove my fuel mileage!! Do you have any personal experance with the Tornado!! You must not, I have. You think it will not work that's fine with me!! I live with my results you live with yours!!
