In an effort to replace a broken flexplate on my 89 F250, the bellhousing fell apart when we unbolted the tranny from the motor!!! Now I need to find another tranny even though the one I had was perfectly fine UGHHH!!!
Now you know why you had a bad flexplate - or what a bad flexplate can cause to happen.
I have seen this happen once before but not on a C-6, though. Don't know which came first, the cracked case or the bad flexplate.
If your C-6 is good, you might want to consider getting a junkyard case which will fit your application, and moving your good innards to the replacement case.
If the C-6 case is not all smashed to rat's poop you may want to consider having it welded .
This option is best done though with a template of the bolt pattern from your engine which you can make yourself with light cardboard and the welder will really appreciate the effort and spend far less $$$ time doing it .
As long as none of the breakage is right into the transnmission body itself or right up close to it the required heat to do this will not hurt your tranny.
A good welder will do it in stages anyway letting his root passes cool etc before
doing a solid weld in steps as well .
I do not know about your area but used C-6 trannys are getting fairl expensive around here with any kind of a guarantee they will work and a complete rebuild is running $600 Can . Most wrecking yards will not part with them for much less as they also know they are getting to be a commodity
they can demand a buck for
Check the dowel pins that align the transmission and motor. Missing or improperly installed dowel pins can cause a broken flex plate and/or broken transmission housing.
