Enjoying hi-torrque starterr

I never had any starter problems, but I wanted to upgrade the electrical system of my truck to make sure that it is always the one that starts when all of the vehicles are buried in snow. Actually, it always had started, the coldest it has ever been in was about 17 below zero and it started up easily enough. But I am a "preventative" sort of guy, and an overkill one at that. I like to be _sure_!

So, I put in a 950 CCA battery, a 160 amp alternator, and finally the high torque starter.

The starter is actually a different type - it is about half the size of the stock starter, and you also have to wire it a little bit differently (a very simple procedure, and the starter came with everything that I needed).

I paid $60 for it new on eBay. I love this thing! It turns the motor over quite nicely in the cold, and the coolest thing is how it sounds. It sounds like the starter in a brand new truck. It does not grind and churn like old-fashioned starters. It is very quiet - if you heard it turning over, you would never guess that it was a 1990 Bronco that was starting.

Oh yeah - the point is that I recommend this type of starter to anyone who is considering it. It is worth the money and time.

Ford makes it, among others. - If you look it up, it's called a permanent magnet gear reduction starter, (or PMGR). If you go to an auto parts store, ask for a starter for a 93 Mustang GT. Or look on E-bay - they look distinctly different from the "old school" Ford starters.

That's what I got, a permanent magnet gear reduction starter. I am not sure exactly who made it, but I paid $60 on eBay. It looks a lot different, it is about half the size of the stock starter. Well worth the 60 bucks.

yeah my 96 bronco came stock with that. Not a bad starter had a couple problems with it over the 8 years I owned it, solenoid acts up after time. I now carry a spare solenoid for in the field repairs. Its actully not a bad job to do, truck is high enough to crawl under, 2 bolts and the starter is off, 2 torex screws and the Solenoid comes off, put it all back togeather and off you go. I sugest you do the same, or you can beat on it while someone turns to key. If you like me you hate to have to pay someone to tow it, or the high repair cost a repair shop will charge you while away from home.

bossind; you say your 96 came stock w/ the PMGR starter? Hmm? I have a 96- how woud I know if I have the type starter.

reason is this: I don't know if I need a new starter/solenoid or a battery. ?? My truck has been cranking "slowly" or differently for about 6 months. Actually, yesterday after a short 10 minute drive- and a few quick stops- when I got in to crank her after the second stop it did not start- almost a crank but really a half crank, then the next turn of the key produced a full crank but no start , then the third crank- started her up. The third stop was to gas up 29 gal. of fuel- and then it started fine. But I do notice some slower cranking. I have never replace any starter parts.
