Hello everyone, yesterday my truck began to give me some problems starting. The engine turns over just a couple of times then it sounds like the starter disengages and winds up. it took multiple attempts but it finally fired up. Does this sound like the starter or could it possibly be the starter relay? Any help would be great thanks in advance you guys are always very helpful!

Sounds like the solenoid not keeping the starting gear engaged in the flywheel or starter gear missing teeth. It could be some other things, but most likely solenoid.
Check the starter mounting bolts, they sometimes work loose. Top one is hard to get to but make sure it's gudentite.
If the starter is just kaput there are good ones and bad ones, do your due diligence and research that. If possible, having your original rebuilt at a local shop is often the best.
the hard-to-reach but loose bolt problem just happened to me last week (see post). The engine would crank 2 - 3 times, then a most disagreeable metal on metal sound. All gone using some blue locktite.
I forgot to mention that after the first time this happened my fuel gauge dropped to empty however the tank is 3/4 full. Does this throw a wrench in this situation? Once i got the truck started the fuel gauge eventually returned to normal.
Definitely sounds electrical. I would first check the starter bolt like recommended earlier to be sure, then check the ground wires from the batteries to the block ground and the hot wire between the battery and starter. I bet there is something loose or very corroded.
The starter was the issue. When I went to remove the old one the upper bolt was missing. I got a new bolt and put the old one back in just to see if that was the problem...no such luck. Anyhow put the new one in with the new upper bolt and all good. Thanks for the input everyone.
