I may be off a year, they could have changed mid-year.
The outer hub is the same between all the years. To the orginal post if you want to upgrade to the WARN premium they run $160+ on EBAY brand new. Try your local parts chain for the same pricing.
I used to have a 1980 F 150, taking the Hubs off was no big deal, but I had to have this big "Castle Nut" to take the hubs apart. I have an 01 F250. Do I need one of these to take my hubs apart? I have snap ring pliars, so that is not a biggie.
I can never get my hubs to unlock after using. I do the whole backing up thing and they still hang up. I know they aren't disengaged cuz I can hear them bang if I turn too sharp.
Any ideas??
My 99 has the Auto hubs, but being the second owner all of the lettering is long gone. I am assuming CCW is auto, centered is unlocked and CW is locked?

Your hubs could be bad...period. Or the vac solenoid could be defective.
One thing to try is make sure your getting vacuum when locking and unlocking from the solenoid (located passenger side fender beside battery).
If you're getting vacuum, then I would disassemble and clean the hubs, carefully, making sure that there are no parts broken or worn.

Long time ago - again, Bowcop.
I'm not sure what you're talking about on the Castle Nut, but the SD hubs are fairly easy to take apart. Once you take them off you can see what I'm talking about.

There is no center position, and in fact I certainly wouldn't leave the **** there, since it might shred parts internally!
Auto means the dash switch controls the hubs, i.e. they're unlocked in 2WD like you want, and locked in 4WD like you want. The Lock position is just a backup in case the auto part breaks. (And if the old '97 era auto hubs had a failsafe like that, there wouldn't be as many of us switching to Warn hubs!)

Whoa! I didn't see that "centered" part!
I was just assuming he had the standard auto hubs - that have no centered area.
With a locker in the front of my 2000 I had to take off the factory hubs to get them disengaged. Luckily it can be done by hand in less than a minute when you get good at it. I switched to warn premiums and never had the problem again but i did explode 2 driver side and 1 pass side axleshafts and also 2 carriers.
i know this is an old thread, but i am confused. i have an 02 f350 4wd and my stock hubs have 2 positions, regardless of the transfer case shift position. they are either locked or unlocked, no automatic position that i know of. so did this option only occur on different model trucks?
