Manual locking hubs
Manual locking hubs
I live in Florida and engage my 4x4 on my 02 F350 very seldom. My passenger side hub has been increasing more difficult to rotate into lock for a while. Today while pulling my boat I had to use a wrench with a screw driver through the oposite end to rotate it galling the plastic insert. What is going on. How do I remedy this problem. Thanks for any help.

Mine was the same way i finally got a set of hubs for a 97 f350 they bolt right in with no mods the hubs are expensive if u get them from a parts store i think advance wants right at $200 but i think it would be money well spend my hubs got so tight i had to start putting pliers on them to turn em.
The front axle depends on what truck you drive. Any SRW from '99-'02 will have the Dana 50, the '03-'04s will have a Dana 60. If you drive a DRW '99-'04 will have a Dana 60 front.
Warn makes a replacement hub, but you will loose the ESOF if your truck has that option. You will need to get out to lock in the hubs instead of turning the switch.

I would think pulling the hub and cleaning and greasing it would be the cheaper option.
The hub is really pretty simple to remove and service. Just maybe half a dozen parts not counting screws and such.
The hardest part is finding the big(3 inch?) internal C Clip that holds the hub in. It is usually covered with grease and is easier to feel around the inside of the axle hub for it than it is to see. Once you get the C clip out the hub slides right out. This assumes things aren't rusted tight.
The locking mechanism in the cap may just be gunked up and need a cleaning and light lube. You may not even need to pull the rest of the locking assembly out, although it is easy and worth doing once you get that far.
You need only a very light coat of grease on the working of the hub. Do not gob it on.
Good Luck,

Okay Guys, speak english. Actually, I keep reading posts that mention SRW and DRW trucks, but I cannot find anything so far that tells me what SRW and DRW mean. Could someone take pity on me and tell me so that I can stop my useless searching? It ain't gittin' me anywhere anyways. Thanks.
Speaking from the, "old style get out and lock your hubs to engage 4wd days"...I was always told that once a month lock the hubs and drive around town maybe 20-30 miles to keep the hubs in good working order. Maybe the same should be true for the newer auto-engage/manual locking hubs.
