My 90 Bronco with 5.0 FI and AOD transmission has been running like crap for a year. Running VERY rich and using a lot of fuel, 5-6 miles a gallon and very sluggish, noticable loss of power. I've changed all kinds of parts with little to no help, and I've long suspected a bad engine control computer but I was reluctant to change it possibly for nothing. I had Autozone pull the codes and they said none. I finally broke down and bought a code reader and it's finally giving me code 15. "Failure in Electronic control assembly (ECA)-problems with keep alive memory" First, does anyone have any suggestions for the rich fuel problem before I go blow the bucks on a new computer? Also my computer has the Ford part number of E9TF-12A650-AL2A. Both Autozone and Advance Auto show a possible replacement of E9TF-12A650-ALA which ends in ALA instead of AL2A. Any help please.
As for code 15 mabey some one else can help u there ,ide say oxygen sensor problem if your suffering 6-10 miles loss in mileage, have a haynes manuel ?good info, it states dirty or clogged air filter, incorrect timing (remember spout connector) emmissions system (oxygen sen) is part of this, fault in fuel or electrical systems mabey computer, fuel injectors malfunction.i know this is a pain especially at high gas prices ----on my car i suffered a 10 mile drop in mileage and ended up being an oxygen sensor----- i too am a parts changer Hope this helps TR
Poss fuel press regulator bad-is fuel in red vac hose attached to it? ACT or ECT bad indicating wrong temps a poss.Pcm keeping injector open all the time a poss. Try www.car-part.com (free to use) for your pcm.
I've had a problem for so long that some of these parts I've replaced over a year ago and could be bad again already. I've replaced the distributor cap, rotor, spark plug wires, spark plugs, fuel pressure regulator (two years ago) TPI sensor, fuel injectors, O2 Sensor (one year ago), K&N air filter, upper manifold gaskets, all throttle body gaskets, engine coolant temperature sensor, and probably other parts I've forgotten about. When I had the throttle body off I cleaned it so it's spotless. I'm running out of items to change. I'm thinking I might have a worn camshaft as the Bronco has a lot of miles but that should only give a lack of power, not the rich fuel problem, or a bad catalytic converter but it's made on the Y pipe so it's not easy to check or change. Yesterday I hooked up the code reader and attempted to try a test while the engine was running. Within seconds it raised the RPM up to about 2000 and then promptly stalled as it dumped a big (bigger than usual) load of fuel in and killed the engine.
You need to moniter your pids to see what the sensors are doing (voltages-temps-position,etc) Without the use of a scanner- Snap-on- Ford NGS, it is impossible to diagnois without being there.Cats do not make your engine rich- in fact rich cools cats down and do not do damage to them!!!Seen plastic body Ects cause this- because it MUST be metal where it screws in intake- most time plastic ETCs sends pcm signal that coolant is 40 below 0- now engine needs more fuel-hence rich.
