My dealer is waiting to hear from Ford whether they will tear down my 03 6.0 with about 15,000 miles on it drop in a new engine. If they go for the new one what should I watch out for? Should I insist on the new one or the rebuild?
I thought it was a lifter or rod. That is what it sounded like when I took it in. Ford has already replaced a couple of injectors but the service manager said the engine was still banging like crazy this morning. Of his own accord, he contacted Ford to see which way they want to go.
A rod going bad is a rare thing on one of these 03's. What was going on just before the noise started? Do you have any mods?
I was pulling a stretch of road up here we call the Hope Princeton trail. Good elevations and steep grades with a 15,000# trailer attached. Got up and down just fine. Plenty of power and no problems. Didn't notice the noise until the following morning when I cold started. Whatever the problem, the engine is broken and the dealer has asked Ford if they'll replace it. Is there some stuff just not worth rebuilding? I'm confident my dealer will do a good job regardless of the outcome. I've never been in this situation before and I just don't know which way to go. Thankfully I've found FTE and I can get some experiencd advice. FWIW.
No mods but let's say I had enough power to embarrass anyone who wanted to challenge me. (You never know who's reading this)

If it is a bad rod, I would go for a new engine. If it is a bad valve train part, I would go with the repair. These 6.0's are built well in the lower end. Keep us posted on what they find.

I'm concerned I'm in the same boat on my 04. I pulled a 9000 pound about 75 miles through some steep hills and such, and immediately after I heard a ticking that sounds like a lifter, and my truck is idling rough on cold starts and blowing a little bit of white smoke. I am carrying it to the dealer, but I am very concerned.
Where have you been SBV? Good to see you back, BTW did you bring Choctaw Bob with you?
Now for the response, I would tend to lean on them for the new motor. You bought a new truck, not a remaned one. You paid for a warranty of a new vehicle, not a reman. 15,000 mile failure should by all accounts be Fords baby. Let them rock it.
Response #2 if you have had good dealings in the past with this particular dealership and you trust them, by all means if they back up thier warranty repairs let them make the call. I would ask them if future claims on a repaired motor would be covered for time lost working the truck, loaner, ect. ect. As Ford has been all over the place on this.
With statement #1 you get no guarantee that it will be any more reliable that in statement #2. It is hard to spend $40,000+ on a truck like this and then get a focus as a loaner. I would just make sure that you and your dealership are on the same page, and he understands your concerns, and by all means, get them in writing.
