I own a 97 F-350 w/ 460 automatic 4x4 with 150k miles on it. The only mods to the truck is a SUPERCHIP and a K&N filter. I do all the regular maintence when recomended. I only use the truck for pleasure and i dont pull anything with it .
I have noticed the tranny not acting right latley, it seems to "fall" into gear at normal driving speed. " it seems like its in a hurry to get to overdrive when i take off "I dont know if its the converter acting up, or its slipping into gear before it should. It wants to go into overdrive at 35mph where it used to go into overdrive at around 45-48.
anyone with knowledge of the E40D tranny ???
thanks for any help !!!
Common problems with the E4OD not picking the right gear are problems with the throttle position sensor on the throttle body and problems with the MLPS sensor on the side of the transmission (shaped like a baseball diamond, on the driver's side). Also the vehicle speed sensor can mess things up, does the speedometer work right?
the TPS has 3 wires comming out of it...how do i check to see if its working properly? and if it's not.. then how can i adjust it ?
the speedo is working fine.
what is the process to check the MLPS ?
Heres a free bump to the top.I want to keep this thread alive for you,and myself since I'd like to know the procedure for testing the tps and mlps too.I have the same truck with 100k fewer miles and my E4od is acting up too.By the way what differences did you notice when you installed the Superchip.A chip is my next buy. They claim noticeably firmer shifting from stock when you put it in???
Sorry I cant be a help to you,but somebody will jump in with the info!
Hey 351
thanks for the reply
i bought a "SUPERCHIPS" chip from motorhaven about 8 months ago. After i installed it i took the truck out for a test drive and noticed a diffrence right away in the power and the shifts. It wasn't a BIG diffrence but it did improve the firmness in the shifts. Only noticed a lil diffrence in the HP about 5-10 gain i think. The milage was improved but not enough to get excited about.
Mine is a 96 F150 4X4 Super cab.
It seems that 2nd is slipping and reverse may be starting to slip.
When I am on a hill if I put in 2nd it just sits there awaiting further instructions.
If I put it in 1st or D it starts to move.
When in reverse it just sits there until I give it more pedal.
My 351 4x4 truck is like that. My 300 4x2 truck is a little more quick to take off if you just take your foot off the brake but it's lighter too. Both have transmissions that are just fine. I understand that if it's slipping badly you get jerking or it feels like it's in neutral or both. It won't move easy in 2nd. "2" picks second, not 1st and 2nd. You start out in 2nd gear if you pick 2. I wouldn't worry about it unless it shudders or won't move when you step on it. You'll also get a blinking OD light if there is slippage.
