Electrical or Tranny
I have a 1994 F350 with the E40D Tranny. At random times, while driving of course, the overdrive light on the shifter starts flashing and the tranny really starts slipping. It will over rev going from 1st to second and then slam into gear real hard. It feels like it is completely slipping and not catching in first gear. Then just as randomly it starts it eventually goes away. The amount of time it stays like this seems to vary. I just bought the truck so I'm hoping I don't have to drop a brand new tranny in it already. Anyone ever had this happen before?

Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Electrical connections are one possibility.
Does the speedo work flawlessly?
Does the tach also work flawlessly?
And the FILP sensor on the IP is another input that needs to work correctly.
Any of the above will cause the transmission to go into limp mode, not good to operate with it in limp mode.
We have several guys here that are very good on the E4OD tranny, I am not one of them.
