I have a 89 full size Bronco (351W) which I have just about restored everything. It WAS running fine but has started a banging noise in the engine. Sure sounds like timming is way off. I put it in storage for over a month. Recently started it up and banging was gone (untill I turned it off & on again). I suspect the Computer since I changed everything else under the hood. Any clue were to start?
Welcome to the FTE! Before somebody can give you any advise we need more info than what you gave.
Is it a banging noise like main bearings clanking or is it pinging like someone is rattleing a chain around inside your engine?
Did you rebuild the motor or is a stock one?
How many miles do you have on it?
Does the noise increase with rpm's or is it constant regardless how fast the motor is spinning?
Does it only do it when it idles or driving or both?
Answer these and maybe we can pin point your problem.
It is a banging noise. It increases with RPM. It is NOT a bearing, rod or valve since it had no noise once, then noise started up again later. It is a stock motor that has been rebuilt. It has about 2k miles on it. No water in oil, etc, etc.
Its not your timing, and I'll tell you why, you said it was making this noise, you turned it off and stored it for a month, then started it and the banging was gone, then shut her down and upon restart the banging was back. Timing doesn't correct itself to that extent. If the timing was that way off you would have had a check engine light which would have stored a code. Don't rule out a rod or main bearing just yet, I've had bearings spin on me and go crazy then all of sudden they will lodge in place and quiet up and then let loose again and start banging again. What I suggest is try to pin point where exactly the noise is coming from, i.e. top half, botton half, front or rear. If you only have 2k miles on a re-build it could be possible something let loose, could be a torque convertor bolt hitting the fly wheel or a valve keeper might have come off and one of your valves is hitting the piston top. It could really be a number of things. But trying to pin point exactly where the noise is coming from is key to figuring out your problem.
