Hello all My engine quit at the gas station the other day. I thought it was outa gas, But NO! It just refused to do the normal thing and start.
When cranking, I could hear BANG BANG BANG inside the motor. I don't
understand what could've gone wrong, But the fuel pump wasn't pumping fuel
So I installed a new one. Same thing. BANG BANG BANG Now It won't
turn over at all. The flexplate got destroyed in the prosses of trying to get it
started. You can see more in 67-72 F-series truck section under
motor blew after 10 mi. I have to figure out what went wrong.
Any IDEAS???
Remove spark plugs.
Put 15/16 wrench on front bolt.
Will it turn over by hand?
Yes - go looking for other stuff.
No - go looking for the engine hoist.
If the answer to above was "Yes"
Remove distributor cap and valve covers.
Rotate the engine with the above referenced wrench.
Are all the valves getting opened and closed?
Is the distributor shaft turning?
If the answer to both questions are "Yes" we keep looking
If the answer to either is "No" we start unbolting big parts....
If the answer above was "Yes" find an air hose - with air in it...
Connect the air hose to each cylinder while the valves are closed.
Soft "hissing" from the crankcase area is likely OK
Big noisy "hissing" and air coming out the exhaust, or the intake, or oil filler means we go find the cherry picker.
If we are "OK" so far...
Remove oil filter and cut it open with tin snips and spread out the element
(Grab some band aids to stem the bleeding - damn that metal was sharp)
Is the filter element looking pretty clean?
Is the filter full of shrapnel?
