Arghhh! I have a rear main seal leaking, radiator hoses leaking, and tranny coolant line leaks. I need to just go through it and replace all of my radiator hoses and tranny coolant lines. Any idea how much the parts will run for a 96' 5.8l?
All of these parts cost very little to buy. Unfortunatly if you don't do the work yourself it could cost you an arm and leg to get it done. The rear main seal being the hardest. Involves removeing the tranny from the engine, dropping the oil pan, removing the rear main cap etc, etc.. The other fixes are relatively easy if you have any mechanic knowledge at all.
Are you sure its the rear main seal? Sometimes the valve (rocker) cover gaskets will leak and run down the bellhousing making it look like a rear main seal leak. My 2 cents.

I've heard that before and as far as I can tell it looks like the rear main. The back of the valve covers feel dry. I'll make sure before I dig into it to be on the safe side. I plan on doing all the work myself with some possible help from friends. The rear main will probably have to wait until I acquire more tools like a torque wrench for the fly wheel. If I'm not mistaking, Ford went to a one piece rear main after 84 so hopefully I won't have to remove the pan.
On second thought, I think my pan gasket is leaking too, which is a real pain. I have to remove the radiator and the intake just to get enough clearance to jack the motor up in order to get the pan out... not fun! Especially because it won't fit in the garage after the lift and it's starting to get chilly outside. I may have a friend who will loan me his garage for a weekend to get it all done.
i've never had to jack the engine up to change the oil pan gasket, search oil pan gasket i can do the one in my 90 f150 in 45 minutes to aN hour, isnt as bad as some people think it is
just my 2cents
I'm not sure if you have the one peice or the split seal, but if you go through all that troublr to replace it you might as well do the oil pan, because you know it is eventually gonna leak and who wants to do all that again As far as jacking up your rig to remove the pan it depends on what motor you have and what year it is. If the sump is in the rear of the engine I beleive you will have to raise the motor up to be able to clear the oil pick-up tube, I know they had to raise my motor in my 94 f-150 I-6 to replace it. I have also heard that fel-pro makes a 2 piece gasket set so don't have to lift the motor but don't know how reliable they are.
Thanks for the input. I'll double check my haynes manual but I'm pretty sure it says I have a one piece rear main. I have the 351, so I'm almost positive I have to lift the motor. I have to drop the pick up tube into the pan and then pull the pan after the motor is lifted. It may be a while befor I get that far but I'll keep you posted when I finally do tackle it.
