I have a 94 Ranger XLT 2.3L with the Mazda 5 speed transmission. My son just wrecked it and destroyed the body but the engine and transmission are still ok. Incidentally, it's a short wheel base truck. What I need to know is the possible year range and Models of small Ford trucks and/or sedans that this engine and transmission will fit in? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
the 2.3 motor and trans will fit in a 93-97 ranger for sure. it may go as far back as 88 and up to the 99 models. i think 2000 was the year that they changed from the 2.3 to 2.5.:-X11
The 2.3L and transmission will fit all the Rangers '93-'97. As far as anything newer than that...you'll have to ask around. I believe in '98 or '99 Ford switched to the 2.5L for the year. But they are back to the 2.3L for whatever reason. I believe half way through '01 to present, they are using a new 2.3L twin cam. So really...If I were you I would look for a '93-'97 Ranger to build up. If you wanted to build a 4x4 out of it, I'd say go buy a junk '93-'97 Ranger and stroke the 2.3L up to 2.85L, bore out the cylinders, new roller cam, new head (ported of course), increase the compression ratio, and by the time you're done, be almost like throwing a 3.0L in a 4x4 but yet you've done it with an I4. Just a thought if you and/or your son wanted a project and a 4x4. Hope we answered your question for you and then some possibly. Best of luck to you.
My '98 is a 2.5 standard trans. The Haynes people publish the same repair book for the Ranger and Mazda B series. Probably not a whole lot of difference between engines and transmissions.
Good Luck.

The engine and tranny will fit any Ranger from '82-'98, Mazda's from '93-'98. Transmision may even fit newer models. Engine wiil fit others also, even the Mustang and T-bird.
