the reason i ask is that my truck is a 1 ton and geared for pulling. It runs 4500 at 70. I have a tach that maxes at 6000 rpm(90 mph).It will easily go past that.I bought the long block from a rebuild shop that builds some of their engines for racing. It really runs and pulls better around 5000.I get 10mpg and it does not matter what speed i go.
Wow, that's really fast for an FE. I'd be cautious about running above about 4500rpm for sustained periods. The 360's use long rods, and these are known for not being the strongest rod around. I've heard of them stretching and breaking around 6000rpm. Also, the oil is probably all up in the heads at the rpm's it sounds like you're doing on the highway.
I'd either change the gears out to get the rpm's down or drive slower. Keep reving it up to 6000rpm and I guarantee it will not live long.
i'm running 4.10s, and I'm at about 3400rpm on the highway 70-75mph. Mine likes it, but it's nothing like a stock 360.
those don't sound like typical stock FE RPM numbers. And the mileage is atypically impressive as well. Might want to look at your plugs, you might be running lean at those higher rpms. What carb are you running?
the carb is a new 2v my dad gave me. He said it was for a 60's IH. The filter i found for it was from a 70's Dodge truck not an IH.I had to use an adapter to make the carb fit. I pull a 40' rv with it and i get around 5mpg. I have a manual choke. I cannot keep it pulled out very much before it will run rich and cut out.I think it is getting enough fuel. I have not pulled the plugs to look recently.

It sounds more like your tach is wrong - maybe set for a 6 cyl engine. I would measure my rear end ratio and the diameter of my rear tires and mathmatically figure out what RPM I was running at 60.
*****, thanks for the tip. I checked the diff and it is a 3.73. no wonder i pass everything. I am running about 2800 at 70. It did not sound like the motor was about to blow up. I see why now. I am going to get a new tach soon this old one is a pos. This helps explain why i get 10 mpg most of the time. I will reply when i get a new guage.I have 265/75/16 tires about 31.6" tall
