I just purchased a Ford Ranger FX4 and had a Class 3 trailer hitch installed by the dealer. With the automatic tranny the owner's manual lists the towing capacity at 5200 lbs. But, I've noticed on this site and others the mention of a Payload Package #2. This site shows that the rear drum brakes are bigger with this option. Are there other upgrades (like tranny cooler or suspension) that are included with this package? Ford makes it tough to figure out the true towing capacity of a vehicle. Any info on upgrades that are not on my truck and the effect on its towing capacity would be appreciated.
This shows under specifications - rear brakes, that the 4x2 has 9 x 1.75 rear drums and the payload package #2 gives 10 x 2.5. What else does this payload package #2 include? I'm trying to figure out if my FX4 with an auto tranny has all the equipment it needs to reach max tow capacity.
I checked my information and the payload package does not seem to affect maximum trailer weight. The payload package would be listed on your window sticker or the invoice, I'm sure you could find out from your dealer. The maximum trailer weight is for an empty truck, just a driver.
