Payload and camper package

New member here. Thanks in advance for any input.
I'll be ordering a 2017 XLT SC super duty F-250 gasser. I want to tow a 5th wheel trailer with it.
I have no doubt I will be within towing capacity, but I'm concerned about payload. anyone here have any information on new payload capacity for the 10,000 GVWR superduty? Will ordering the camper package increase my payload capacity considerably?

camper pkg

It shouldn't change your payload. It will upgrade your front axle springs.

See camper pkg explanation on Ford's website.

Camper package will up grade your front springs 1 or 2 levels depending on basic suspension of the truck. Will add rear sway bar and slide in camper certification which has much to do with center of gravity rating. If you order a specific GVWR package talk to your dealer. The package is normally a downgrade in certified GVWR for registration or tax purposes. It does not actually change the capability but it does change the documents. EDIT: it will also add the overload springs to the rear.

A 250 is always going to be 10k or less GVWR because they want to keep it as a class 2 truck. (Class 2 = less than 10,001#) So, the camper package will increase stability but not payload. Payload should be very close to the current generation plus a few hundred lbs for the aluminum weight savings.

I think the '17 will lose about 300# weight if memory serves me right. Payload is indeed limited by the 10k as mentioned, not the abilities of the truck. If the truck is for personal use you can consider going up to the F350, though that will mean taking the slower transmission, and other than annual registration their shouldn't be a DOT requirement.

Thank you for all the great useful information folks!

Here are the specs for the 5th wheel trailer I'm considering for the 2017 F-250:

Dry Axle Weight (approx. Lbs.): 8545
Dry Hitch Weight (approx. Lbs.): 2663
Net Carrying Capacity: 5392
Gross Dry Weight – Lbs.: 11208
Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) – Lbs.: 16600

Will I need more truck, or less trailer?

You really need to wait for the actual numbers and specs to come out. If it was the current generation, you'd be fine as the 250 was physically identical to the SRW 350 if you ordered the camper pkg. However, the new ones may be different. That said, stepping up to a SRW 350 has been historically only about 800.

FWIW invoice on a RC XLT 4x4 is a 1116 difference between 250/350 now. I'm sure "justified" by the heavier transmission. You're pretty close for a leftover '16 though!
