I read up on this and hydro boosting. The pcv (jar) acts like a filter and man does it work. there is no negative effect on the motor. I built one and drove about 50 miles since installing it and now have about 20ml of crap that the pcv would otherwise have sent back into my intake. I am not a tree hugger but do want a cleaner running mtr. to me cleaner running means longer life and better mpg. Later I will try the hydro boost and report back to you guys...
It is better to burn that stuff up than dump it into the environment along with the solvents etc that are used to clean up the device. That stuff is vapors and gasses that bypass the rings and come from the combustion chambers, it is all right to put them back in the combustion chambers.
The device will not improve your mileage at all, or reduce wear on the engine.
no this thing does not improve mpg but it does promote a cleaner motor. You can heat it using your heater lines to further break down the vapor to burn them. The heavy oil and crap that is drawn up into it does promote carbon build up and that has, to my understanding been an issue for older motors. I don't know it's just something I found that works and thought I'd share my find.
I used to have one of these things on my mustang's motor. It DID increase my mileage a bit, but not noticably. I never had to go through emmissions with my mustang, so I have no idea if it burned cleaner or not. But, I DO know that when I raced it, I would ALWAYS have to empty the jar after the race. Mine was a proffessional instalation of one of these set ups that was produced in the early 1990's for RV's. It wasnt worth the money I paid for it then, and I would say it probably still isnt worth the money, especially with a home made job that will likely have vacume leaks. Typically, a vehicle gets the best mileage when it is unmodified. Now, dont read that as "a vehicle gets the best PERFORMANCE" unmodified. Just my two cents worth from experience.
Now what to you do with that toxic soup once you've collected it? Bar-B-Que sauce? Couldn't you get the same benefit by running the PCV system with vacuum off a fitting in the exhaust system (headers)?
as far as the vapors go they are not stopped from reentering the engine. JUst the sludge. Which can be easily cleaned. you can dump it into your waste oil container that you have for your used oil from said engine. Yes there is a small amount but like all things it adds up over time. so far I have now vac leaks and I will keep monitoring it but since it's tied into my pcv system i'm pretty sure the mtr will tell me when I have a leak
The website you referenced made claims of a 25% mil<! >eage increase:
"Here is a device that you can build that will improve your gas mi<! >leage by at least 25%..."
This is bogus, just let the PCV do it's job. Change the PCV valve every year. The carbon buildups come from worn out PCV valves.
The entire device is a vapor trap or vapor separator. The vapors are cooled by the glass beads etc and condense on them. It is best to keep it all hot with a nice short path directly back to the combustion chambers.
Actually, devices such as these have a use in supercharged applications where the excessive cylinder pressure causes the breather to inhale more oil, which contributes to preignition. I don't use one, then again I'm not running 14 psi of boost either.
buckeyebronco, it wasn`t leaking oil past the piston rings or anything. It was reving so high from the mods I`ve done to it that it was sucking oil through the pvc system (a very poor system from the factory BTW) and into the carb , it was like running 1:40 oil/gas mix in the tank.
Thats how it looked earlier this year before I was mulching brush with it
