Flaming Headache

Yes, flattened black is forgiving. Gloss black is impossible. Nice thing is you can play with flames or graphics over flat and if you screw up you are out a couple hours sanding. Simple to patch. And yes,I shot this with a cheap touchup gun. I've owned expensive guns. I'm not good enough to honestly see a big difference. I understand you need a real good gun for urethane clears.

One of my buddies just did his Jeep tailgate in a patriotic theme. Draws some great comments.

Flames on the house? Now there's a thought?

Sorry for the blindside lecture. I wear my emotions on my sleeve. That won't change no matter how hard I try.
Fenders - now you've gone and got me to think'n (and we try not to do too much o that here in Auburndale) about maybe flaming my garage door! I'm sure it wouldn't last too long (I do have neighbors....and a wife!) but Man would that be a paint job filled with chuckles!!!
Thanks for the grins!

Thought I would get an outside PIC today after I installed the headlights. Gotta head to work now and it will be dark when I return. Maybe I can get the lights installed later tonight and sneak home for lunch for a PIC sometime this week. It looks pretty good, especially with the lower stance you guys haven't seen yet.

...ah, that's better. Yup, nice job, fenders...and I like the look of dark pinstripping with a bright main color. If your truck was dark ( black, dark blue, etc.) then a very light stripe would be the ticket.Keep it thin, too...about 3/32" to 1/8" max. If you're going to clearcoat it, then paint the stripes on. You are going to clearcoat, aren't you?
Clearcoat, color sand, buff to high gloss, done. Serves 12 or more

Limefire green is a popular choice. I would go with a bright light blue... sky blue, baby blue, whatever name you want to give it. Because? Consider this... blue is on the opposite side of the color wheel from the orange... they are complimentary.
Using a pale blue puts 3 primary colors on your truck in various amounts... red, yellow, blue. Green is a secondary color... like orange. They offer good contrast... but using green gives you 2 primaries and 2 secondaries in various amounts, and in some circles this is too much. A high register blue creates a pleasant transition off the red and contrasts well with the orange. It also plays off the cool white on the leading edge of the truck. The green vibrates on both sides of the red/orange with a certain unpleasant resonance.
Had enough? Based on what I've seen of your work, you've got the eye to make your own good choice. best. himmelberg
Yes, I will likely clearcoat. For now, believe it or not I color sanded and buffed (ever so gently) the flames before I laid down the pinstripe tape. Why you ask? Because my truck is catalyzed acrylic enamel. I can't clearcoat with urethane while the paint is still "green". What I really need is to find someone to correctly match the red in a single stage urethane. No luck so far, I'll get it done by spring perhaps. In the meantime I had to fix the hideous mismatch of reds on my hood to front fenders seam. That mission is accomplished. I want to get back on the interior. Numerous details to finish and a drivers door that needs converted from bearclaw back to stock.
I was going to lay the flames down in urethane, but I was afraid I might curdle the AE red with the urethane clearcoat. Probably should have went for it. Too close to winter to open a can of worms.
What I really need is a complete paint job in urethane, but that just isn't going to happen right away. I have to completely finish messing with body panels first. I'm tired of repainting and re-chipping panels.

I'll have to use real paint eventually, as Oil Leaks suggests, but I won't be driving the brush. I know my limitations in the art world. I'll hire it out.
The yellow to orange to red flows nicely before I pinstripe. Nice and orderly from one primary to the next on the color wheel. So why do I need a contrasting color to separate the orange flame to red background? I know you're right, I've got a nice collection of pinstripe tape that didn't look good. Reddish orange should make a great transition for a pinstripe. But it absolutely doesn't. Or did you just explain that to me?
Got the grill and headlights assembled. Ready for outside PICs when it stops raining. I did somehow overspray the running boards with tangerine. Hopefully it won't show in the PICs. It'll be a pain to clean that up out of the board ribs.
Others have rendered opinions and paint, buffing and sanding and offered great ideas.
And then here I sit with a primered truck feeling like the village idiot ! Thanks everyone for giving me something to aim for ! In my resto rod mode, I will be doing paint last and enjoying the driving until then.
Looking good Dewayne

You can get a huge selection of tape colors online from www.beacongraphics.com be sure to ask for a color chart first.
We have a automotive paint store across the street from our business, they carry ~ 100 tape colors and can computer mix paint in any color you can provide a sample of. They can even match age faded colors. (got to be careful if the sample you give them is hazy or dull, it will mix a hazy/dull color for you.) Their scanner must be portable as well, I saw them outside taking readings off a custom painted offshore racing boat not too long ago. Ask around at the local bodyshops where they get their paint.
