Can't install distributor

I can't get my distributor to mesh with the oil shaft, so it'll seat all the way.

Is there a trick to this? I've tried turning the motor over while I push down. That didn't work, so I tried tapping it with a hammer while I turned it over.

What am I doing wrong???

I think I need some help here, before I pull out a bigger hammer!

Rotate the oil pump drive shaft with a 1/4" socket on a 6" extention... then try to get the distributor to line up.

NO tapping with a hammer. Get your #1 piston at TDC, your rotor should be at about 11 o'clock or pointing toward your temperature sensor. As you lower the distributor the rotor will walk forward to end up facing that sensor. It is very frustrating. Look into the hole at the top of the oil pump shaft and see if you've got the beveled end up, if it's not, that's most of your problem. Patience, my friend.

I can't rotate it with a 1/4" socket. Not even my cheap taiwan made sockets are narrow enough to fit in there.

I'm sure I'm getting it in there clocked right. I've noticed how it retards about 10-20 degrees when it meshes with the camshaft, and I've been offsetting it to compensate for that when I insert it.

The oil shaft is recessed about 1/4"-1/2" from the base of where the camshaft should be sitting, so it's just out of the reach of a socket.

I've got a 1/4" drive S&K set. I use the deep socket on the 6" and 3" extention... it's very narrow at the end.

Dizzy not going down ( must be a blonde dizzy) sorry

ctrlaltdl, get yourself a piece of rubber or vinyl hose that has a thin wall to fit thru the bearing support hole and turn the pump drive a few degrees. After a few times the dizzy will go in. A spare dizzy that has the gear teeth ground off ( i use this as a pre-oiler on new motors) works great and you can check the oil pump for freedom of rotation. Does the pump drive have the taper end up and in center of the bearing support?

I put a glob of grease on the end of a long thin flat-head screwdriver. Put that between the pump shaft and the side walls where the dizzy goes in. Then jiggle..lift..push, repeat as necessary. It's always tricky, but it eventually falls.

make sure you're going to fall on the right cam gear. Nothing worse than getting it on the shaft and realzing your off one tooth and have to go back. If your dizzy will swing most of the way around (MSD Billet, non vac advance) it's not that big a deal. But for the old vac advance setup you probably need to be in the sweet spot.

I got it in there, but I wasn't able to prelube, so I was going to ground my coil wire and crank it over until I get oil pressure.

Anyone know how to check my oil pressure off the sender with a multimeter? I don't trust my dash guage.

I was off a notch and had to redo it.

The oil pump shaft keeps falling to the side so the end of the distributor, so it won't line up with it. This time I took a dremel and beveled the end of the shaft all the way to the edge to help line it up.

It worked like a charm!
